Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows if you need a permit to busk in D.C. I have been looking for the laws online but I can't find any.

A number of years ago, I tried to find out if there were busking regulations in DC or if a busking permit was required. I could not get a coherent answer. The DC government does have some written rules governing performing in parks. In order to put on a free performance in the park, you have to (or had to) post a bond for a couple thousand dollars before hand, in case of damage to the park and to cover potential clean-up. This rule obviously was not aimed at buskers but at big events. I've spoken to a number of buskers in DC, and none of them has any permit. So if you want to busk in DC, I would suggest you just go do it. You will see lots of musicians busking and not being challenged by the police, so you might want to consider busking in the same general areas as they are in. Dupont Circle and the Gallery Place metro are popular areas. Busking on federal property, especially on the Mall, however, isn't tolerated. The Park Police will run you off in an instant, so I'm told.

DC is a unique place in that there are protests and rallies every single day and a constant flow of "crowds" of some sort or another. For the most part, you can get away with busking without anyone batting an eyelash. As long as nobody complains, you should be left alone.

The already mentioned Dupont Circle and the Metro's would be places to check out. I don't know about the Mall now-a-days, but many moons ago I had friends that did balloon animals there with no problems - that was pre-911 so things may have changed. I'd suggest the "it's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission" motto.

On a recent visit to DC last summet, we went to the waterfront areas of Alexandria and there were buskers EVERYWHERE. It was terrific. Music, magic, performance art, painters. Do it.
