I have to agree with Blair. I'm not rich, but I have done a good bit of fundraising around affluent people. While door-to-door flyers might work in some neighborhoods in certain circumstances, I think that in this situation you would likely to be positioning yourself in the same category as pesky lawn service operators, itinerant missionaries and the real estate guy nobody uses. Perhaps you can find out about a local charity that has people from your target audience on its board, and then volunteer your services at an event.

Not only is it a bad idea safety wise, going door to door with flyers is a bad idea period and a giant waste of time. Your time could be much better spent learning about the prospects and developing a way to put yourself in front of them.
Basically it boils down to what marketing and selling is: find people who can and want your services and show them how you can help, the rest is just details.

Guys I am merely mentioning something as food for thought and nothing more. I am a designer by trade and design a lot of these for businesses and such. Was working on one today so figured I would share some info. This is not to say it is right or wrong. Just food for thought is all.

Can you clarify whether you personally have done doorhangers in a neighbourhood to promote your magic shows (and how that worked for you)? The way you worded your post, it made it sound like you have done this. - Donald

Nope I have not done it at all. The tip came from the fact that I design these a lot as a graphic designer for businesses. I was working on one just the other day and figured I would share the thought with others as food for thought only. I see a lot of folks doing flyers and figured this was an option (in the right place and right time) that is at least worth looking at is all.

I have a related question, and you might not be able to answer it because of confidentiality or because you don't know. For the people ordering doorhangers, are they ordering for the first time (testing a new marketing idea), or are they ordering again because the idea has worked really well for them personally in the past (successful marketing idea they are repeating)? Again, they are not trying the idea because they saw or heard of someone else doing it. They are doing it again because it's worked for them personally in the past. For example, I got some brochures designed and printed recently, to use in mailings (to a certain market). The reason I did this was because I have printed brochures and flyers in the past, and had show booking success because of mailing them (to a certain market). I'm repeating what works for me personally. It's fine to test new ideas. And there are lots of people who love testing new ideas. Sometimes they do so, while ignoring an old idea that works. I have to wonder about what percentage are personally trying the door hanger idea for the first time? BTW, like the others said, door hangers (and non-mail flyers) get thrown right into recycling at my house. ----------------- Remember the "Door to door" thread? A somewhat related topic. That was not too long ago. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=44&44 - Donald

Donald: The clients I am doing them for have done them numerous times as I have done designs for them many times over. In my day job, I have also designed a bunch of these types of things before. Now I am not sure how they are using them or what markets, but they keep coming back to us. Since I am not an account rep, I do not get a chance to speak with the clients as much as I wish I could. Would love to know some inside information on how they are using them, where and such. It would be interesting information.

What specific types of customers are ordering door hangers? House painters, yard maintenence services, real estate, etc.? I imagine there aren't entertainers in that mix?

You are correct in that I have not seen an entertainer come across my desk. A lot are small businesses but some are very large car dealerships and the like. The clienetele has been fairly diverse from what I have been seeing.

Yes,Paddy said it well with the local free ads. They do reach people.
I also think Kyle is right that many new businesses do introduce themselves with handouts. I have personally used handouts with great success in opening a business. True, I haven't used it in a magic business, but if you wanting local people to perceive you as another local business, then why not do as they do. I always preferred going to businesses over houses. That's where you find working people, those that can afford to hire you. People sitting at home don't usually have much money. I used a 3 by 9 or something like that, (Kyle can tell you more about the right size) printed both sides. It's easy to walk into a business place, introduce yourself as a new business, and hand them the oversized card. Many times they will allow you to leave a stack on the desk or counter. It's not like you selling something, you just introducing a new business. I've always believed that a new business should almost act like a politician trying to get elected. They are not ashamed of what they do and don't seem to fear going out into the neighborhood shaking hands and kissing babies. Flyers are certainly not for everybody, but for those trying to position themselves as a 'local business' flyers are probably better than renting a billboard or putting a sign in your front yard. In the past I've spent thousands of dollars on advertising with large signs and billboards. I honestly believe that the handouts worked just as well in getting right away new local business. Tom

Once a very wealthy man sent me an unsigned check. I sent it back to him with a self addressed stamped envelope, a nice note, and one of my business cards. He sent me back my check signed and my business card, because filthy rich people don't ever deal with common folk.
If you think that hanging cute little signs on their doors will get you a phone call you are extremely naive. If anything they are more likely to give your phone number to the police to discuss your trespassing on their private property.

Hanging door signs does work. My parents did this a lot for their real estate business when the market was hot, and people had it in their mind that they could buy a great house soon. It probably could work for magic, but it would be hard because in order to see good results you should provide a timely and compelling offer (such as a child's birthday special). If you don't know if there are any birthdays coming up, you're playing against the numbers and may not get a call for a while.
If you want to be part time, just get a restaurant to table hop at, and occasionally do some stage shows. Then your past networking experience will come into play and you can make yourself as busy as you want to be (eventually). By the way, my friend who has a very successful marketing business for restaurants (across all demographics) said this today: "People who want a deal take advantage of our mailers because of the timely offer and because its a good deal. Wealthy people take advantage, not to save money, but because it helps them come to an easy decision about something that they already want." |

But Al, the filthy rich people got that way by doing something different. Be funny if it was from hanging signs on doors. LOL
One example: The local pool company is owned by a millionaire, he sent a kid by the other day with a flyer that pool season was approaching fast. As rich as he is, he still wants my business. Still, many businesses around here do use the post office or the local paper to get flyers into the homes. Some newspapers, like the post office, will target specific areas with an insert in the Sunday paper. That really is the better way to get it into homes. Tom

I specialize in corporate work today. But when I wanted to get out of my past "real job" in the worst way I started with days cares who hired me right from day one of my full-time magic career and allowed me to make the same money I made previously without a hiccup. Day cares allowed me to work full time and eventually transfer over to the work I really wanted to do. The key was that I found a market that would start hiring me immediately while corporate work wants you to have a reputation while they also often hire months to years in advance.

Same here Al. I respect yours. My point is that flyers do work for some local businesses. Places like Walmart, Office Depot, Car Lots, Furniture Stores, etc, depend on flyers to get the message out there. Many housewives still buy Sunday newspapers just to get the sale papers out.
It all comes down to who you trying to reach. Main thing is, regardless of how you do it, send it, deliver it, or hang it on the door knob, is to get something in their hands. Tom
