I am looking for suggestions for a basic coins across that uses a ]. Any suggestions (and where the routine can be learned) would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You can't do better than Roths shell coins across. Its in many places, his book, notes, and a few of his dvds including the nycms dvd set volume 1 ( which has over 25 different coins across routines and a lot more stuff...gaffed, non gaffed, extra coins, no extra coins, palm up, palm down, etc. The ] is used in many of the gaffed routines, with additional contributions from Latta, Gallo, and Harbottle. Plus, you will learn 5 different methods for getting the last coin into the spectator's hand.
Should you want a different approach, check out the thread on translocation routines. There are many different methods that use the ] and are pretty easy to do. The ones I always have liked are Dean Dill's and John Kennedy. Have fun!
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

I've either learned or played around with most of what's come down the pike in the last 40 years. If I do coins across for live audience, it's usually Roth's Shell Coins Across.

I have to agree here...
I don't use a [ much with what I do but Roth's [ Coins Across I've always found is as good as it had to get for me. It's a great routine and not hard to get down. I guess there's other good stuff out there but Roth's take is a classic when you want to use a little something extra to show the impossible.

Hey, Michael's advice is right on. I had a shell and did almost nothing good with it until I learned Roth's coins across.
To really use a shell properly, you need a great routine. The Hang pig/w wings (mispelled) is alright, but there are angles problems. There are virtually none, except if you create them with Roth's coins across. A uuge amount of thought went into that routine, to get it where it is. To me, 3 fly looks a bit fake compared to it. I respect other's differing opinions, but the overall consensus would probably lead you to Roth's routine. Remember, you don't have to go to the beach, as a magi, to find a great use for a ], Scott |

Just curious. If you want "basic" as a Coins Across why use a [? An approach that could use any borrowed coins or small objects would seem "more basic" --
but agree that if one wished to use a [ the above advice is sound.

Funsway,
I guess I just like how clean looking the shows are with a [. I like how if you want to hand the coins out you can hold back the gimmick then add it back on and hide it in plain sight. I realize there are slight of hand methods that use borrowed objects, but I think using a ] make some of the slights easier.

The shell does make it all look somewhat cleaner and more importantly, impossible looking. But as to basic, there are a lot of them that aren't hard to do at all that don't use a [ and also look pretty clean.
If you happen to go that way, take a look at Ammar's Simple or Easy Coins Across on his beginner DVD. It's quite nice and "easy" to perform, nothing knuckle buster about it at all, just a couple of simple enough moves makes it all happen. Even more importantly, it teaches the basics of the coins across genre so that you can then fish for yourself as to the effect. I actually learned quite a few CA effects and even came up with one of my own before I gave Roth's [ Coins Across a try. I could see the benefits in both and still do both with and without.

I second the Ammar routine; as a beginner in coin magic, it is one of my most powerful routines. Although I would watch the full dvd and then use the "grab my wrist" steal for the final coin, or any steal you like. That way they really see the coin go in your closed fist, making it stronger than the rest (pretty much as strong as using a shell). I also use the click pass for the 3rd coin straight from Bobo's. It's a great routine to tinker with and I've found it gets great reactions when presented well.

You could do a lot worse than Dayrl's The Mysterious Cross of India. Looks very magical and it's not at all difficult to do and uses no gaffs and tastes like chicken.
