Hi, I was a Magic Hobbyist, and SAM Member years ago, but now getting back into, and feel like a newbie all over again. Something new I just picked up and really like is the "3 Shell Game".

I have been practicing on a hard table service which really isn't bad for the shells I am using. When I tried an old Close Up pad of mine, it really didn't work too well for me. But then I experimented with my computers Mouse Pad, and that material worked really well for me. but of course it's just too small to use. I am not sure if there is a Close Up pad out there made of the same material as my Mouse Pad because I don't know what that material is called.

Here is my question, anyone know what kind of a Close Up pad I should search for that is similar to a Mouse Pad texture?

Thank You...

Go to a large fabric store. Look for wet suit material...feels just like a mouse pad. You can buy it by the yard and mount it to a board to make a table or to rubber backing to make a mat.

You can get large neoprene (mouse pad material) playmats from Trading card game websites in various colors. http://www.nestedegg.com/?p=3
I haven't ever used this brand but if it's anything like other brands, they are exactly the same as typical mouse pads but much larger. If it is too large you can trim it.

Lighter colors get dirty wicked easy. You can also get tubes to roll them up and keep them in because if they get creased, they kind of stay there. If you wash them, let it air dry.

I've used a velvet table top for years. A piece of velvet over a 1/4"-3/8" piece of foam. Good for coins -no talking and works fine for the shells. I found a nice purple velvet dress in a junk store and got 2 workable tops out of it for under $5.00. Hope this helps.

I have never had a problem with either soft nor solid surfaces with my Street Shells (Whit Haydn set) or other sets.

For a great quality of close-up pads that can be ordered in two different finishes in any color, come in stock sizes or can be custom-sized for you, visit Pattrick Przysiecki on the web: http://www.pmsmagic.com. He makes some of the best mats anywhere and they are not overly expensive.

Just FYI, the name of the wetsuit material is neoprene and in some places they call it foamed neoprene.

I hope this information is useful to you.

Oops - just noticed neoprene was already mentioned and I missed it.

Also, try looking in the fabric store for upholstery foam (which, I assume, is what TheGiz was referring to by that term), which comes in various densities and are very good for close-up work.
