Sometimes the trick may effectively fool an adult but they play-it-off as if they are teaching the kids the correct way to respond socially. So the question of what fools adults is often a moot issue. In some cases they are more interested in their relationship with the children and we serve the same purpose as puppeteers or storytellers making our talent only as necessary as needed to entertain their offspring.
(Primarily in America though. many other countries view magicians as artists - Note: save this for a different thread) With that said; Any sucker sliding trick linking rings Sleight of hand with colorful objects Pom Pom sticks Rabbit appearance To go back to my original point. I have approached tables (restaurant work) with a deck of cards & the intention of doing something adult-oriented BUT as soon as the parent(s) realize you do magic, they turn their attention to the kids and invite them to watch "the magician" like you're an object,.... You could be doing your best work but it has no impact on the adult. So to recap (since this is an open poll) Every trick I do for the younger crowd has the ability to fool adults but they are usually happy just seeing their kids have a good time and whether I amaze them or not isn't part of their agenda.

Shouldn't it be the performer that that makes the trick fool the parents rather than the trick itself? If you're relying on the trick you're just the operator, not an entertainer.

Strong reactions to Axtell Magic Drawing Board.
Also, at parties I make sure I do the Invisible Deck for the grown-ups after the show as I'm getting my check and getting ready to leave. I usually do this for the grown-ups hanging out in the kitchen or where ever they are. There is usually a group of dads away from the kids. I do it for them then I hand out my card and they remember that the clown did an amazing trick that was so good fooled the grown-ups.

I think too much focus is on wanting to entertain the adults and the children at the same time. I can understand this desire. However, if you want the adults to be entertained and enjoying the experience, make the KIDS laugh, giggle and love you.
Simply stated, the parents will love you even more if they see the kids having a great time. In this light, I always target to the kids I am performing for. I get them interacting and having a great time. Through this process, the adults love me even more. Kyle

Kyle makes a good point, and I agree with him. but I understand why you would want a few things to impress the adults at the same time. Curt's idea of doing a good trick for the adults later is a good one.

I have a giant sized B'Wave that I use in almost every stand-up show, and standard-sized Twisted Sisters that I use in close-up situations.
I can hold cards from a regular deck in my hands and ask the kids to choose colors or shapes or left/right hand. They are excited to be involved. And then when they "get it right", they are excited to have "won the game" -- and the adults are astounded as you walk through all three phases of the ending. Ed |

Deja Zoo is a fun kids effect that works for Adults.
I don't perform it exactly as the instructions say but I'm fairly sure that would work too. The animals are so much better than Playing cards. News Flash 2.0 of course. Silk Cascade. A bit if contact Juggling to music is fun. -Mary Mowder |

I think adding a variation to a prop works well. In my show, there's a prop that I use (I forget the name of it). It's a metal cannister that can be used to change a liquid into a solid, solid into liquid, etc. I use this in a card trick in the show. The card is selected and placed back in a regular deck. The deck is placed in the cannister, and I pour some water in it. After I shake it up, the deck is now the clear cards (water cards I call them in the show) with one regular card inside of course the chosen card.
The kids love it because they see a visual change of the decks. The adults love it because they see a chosen card magically transfer from one deck to another. It's not the prop itself, but it's how you use it in my opinion. |

I think the problem stems from the false notion that kids need kiddy tricks.
Once you go down that path, you're stuck. For god's sake... Pick any classics you are interested in: rings, rope, balls, silks, cups, cards, eggbag, etc. Learn a routine you like and consider very entertaining for adults. (kids will like anything as long as you engage them) Buy all the DVDs, books, and anything else you can get your hands on to learn subtleties, bits, gags, and lines you can borrow (til you come up with your own) Put it all together MOST IMPORTANT====> Be an engaging, entertaining, confident, bigger-than-life performer Perform it 2000 times. Viola, you're great. Honestly.... why is this so difficult?

I agree Frank. Kids are stupified by uneducational "educational" programs and our magic shouldn't go down to that level too.

After the show was over, I had a lot of parents congratulate me that their kids really liked the show and that they, as parents, enjoyed the show very much too. Some parents told me aswell that they liked a lot that I didn't make jokes on the kids that assisted me or put them down. I answered that my goal was to do magic WITH the kids and to have fun TOGETHER. If the show is an adult show and a kids are present, I always try to get the children involved and interact with them as much as I can so they know that they're invited to have fun and enjoy the show as much as the young at heart. Kyle, as always hit it right on the head! Parents love watching their kids having a good time.
But if I have to answer the initial question... Invisible deck Multiplying Rabbits Extreme burn "Will the cards match" is a simple one that many times fool the adults, and if done with the kids making the decisions, always gets a great reaction. |

Right on Kyle.
Although one or two of the jokes are aimed at the parents it's the kids that Im hired to entertain. If the children are happy and having a ton of fun and they like you a lot---the partents will be happy. Ricky |

I agree with a lot of what is being said here but I always include magic that both entertains the children and impresses the adults. I do a Chameleon Silks routine that that the kids love and it floors the adults. Good sleight of hand magic, properly presented, will accomplish both.

You can fool people by simply just performing a trick, but not necessarily entertain them. That's why we buy tricks. They fool people. We can't fool people just by being entertaining. I get good reactions from both the adults and children when I perform the amazing acrobatic knot which I use my own patter for. I also get good reactions from both adults and parents with miser's dream, vanishing coke bottle, fiber optics, and Danny Orleans jumbo coloring book and vanishing crayons. The vanishing crayons I made are from a box of 64 crayola regular size crayons.
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.
