This has been mentioned...but I must agree on The Three Card Monte.

Here's a nasty one that my Uncle Bernell taught me many years ago:
Bet that you can actually thrust a knife through their sock without leaving a hole. No hedging, no tricks, no gaffs. You can do it. After the bet (have someone else hold the money) have them cross their leg to give you access to the sock...raise the side of the sock, insert the blade of the knife, from the inside to the outside, through the side of their sock about 3 inches from the top. Stop, and ask/confirm that the kinfe is actually through the sock. They will agree. You've accomplished the first part of the bet. Then, WITHOUT removing the knife, slit upwards through the top of the sock, freeing the knife. No hole. One heck of a slit, tho. Grab the money, buy the guy a drink with his own money, and by the time he's drunk that drink, all the surrounding laughing will have died down. Sorta kinda. Keep the change. This one is best done on obnoxious goofs that you want to have avoid you in the future. DON"T do it on your car mechanic or dentist!
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

Paul Daniels performed an interesting routine on UK Tv many years ago, which I have not seen performed since. In his "bunko booth" part of the program he used a long piece of chain, which he draped onto the table, making 3 loops. The spectator was invited to place their finger into one of the loops. If the finger trapped the chain when it was pulled away, then they won the bet. Nothing could be simplier...however, needless to say, they never won the bet. Even when the routine was performed in different ways the outcome was always the same!
I believe there is a publication detailing many such routines, but I do not know where to find it. Wulfie |

I too would have to reccomend Nim. It's very simple but people will keep playing until they figure out how to do it. It's one of those that people know they will lose until they have acquired skill.

I think scam tricks should only be used to entertain or for demonstration only, of course unless we really intend to rip someone off. I would like to believe that magic/magicians has finally received the respect it deserves and it wouldn’t be worth it to ruin it for a few bucks. Darwin Ortiz is known to be a great technician at the card table and an expert at top, mid, bottom deals etc. but he presents as a "demonstration" but in actually it is part of his whole story line for the effect.
If it’s just for fun then I would have to agree with the majority, M.SKINNER'S ultimate three-card monte. Also check out Mexican revolution, the cardiologist and the classic out of this world.

I made $30 in a bar a while back doing 3 Card Monte, just to see if I could do it. But then the owner of the place kicked me out! Oh well!

What happens in Skinner's ultimate monte if you're playing for money in a bar and someone graps a card? You better be quick or you might become dead.

When I bar tended I would have them put a $20 on the bar and then I placed a shot glass on the $20 and filled to the brim with their favorite drink. I then told them if they could remove the bill without touching or spilling the shot the drink was on me. If they couldn't do it then they bought the drink and I got the rest as a tip. The only time I bought was afterwards for being a good sport.

Well, I don't do any for real scams with making a profit in mind. HOWEVER, I do carry a tt ready to do a bill switch. I turn their 5 or 10 into a million dollar bill. Tell them it is a fake and offer to change it back. 3 out of four times they tell me they want to keep the million dollar bill. Nice profit

Ernest Earrick's Double ***ed poker game. The spectator gets to make up his own hand and yours and STILL loses.
However, I never play this for money. Hmmm.. The trick's name from By Forces Unseen is being filtered. It rhymes with Double Hammed. |

3-card monte 3-shell game I like the comment about nim. great game for those who have a head for it... There is another game played on paper called bridge-it where two players take turns and try to bridge from one side to the other (like chinese checker in a way). there is a key move that wins in that game as well. There is also a more familiar game of dots where two player attempt to create squares and fill them with their initials. Most people think this game is even... and it is... if both players know the "key move" and when to play it... Finally , there is another game where players race to a number - say 21 - by adding either 1 or 2 to the running total... if you know the math behind the game, you can win against a player who does not.

Sorry for being uneducated, but what is nim?
Is it short for something? |

Nim is a game played with matchsticks.
There are two main variants. The first is to have a set number of matches (say 17) on the table and you take it in turns to draw 1,2 or 3 matches from the pile. The one who takes the last match loses. You can always win if you go second. Whatever the first person does take enough matches to equal 4, so if they take 3 you take 1. After the first round there are 13 matches on the table, then 9, then 5 so they will always take the last match. Of course once you have won some money using this offer to explain the game to them and teach them how to do it. Then offer to play the game again but going first, they will naturally jump at the chance of winning their money back, except that this time you have an extra match hidden in your hand which you then pretend to take from the pile. This will through off their count meaning you should be able to win again. The other variant is more interesting. The version I use has 4 rows of matches with a different number of matches in it. The first row has 1, the second 3, the third 5 and the last 7. Each player takes it in turns to take as many matches as they like from any one row. Again this is matchmatical and you only have to learn a few patterns to be able to win this against an unprepared player. There are several good sites in the internet that not only explain the winning strategy but also provide simulators so you can play against the computer. |

Nim is a simple proposition bet played with matchsticks, coins, toothpicks, cards, or simply drawn on the back of a business card. The version of Nim that I use is taught in Gambling Scams by Darwin Ortiz, pg 238.

I've always had luck taking money from people (in small amounts, and for entertainment purposes only!) by doing the scotch-n-soda / dollar bill trick. It's an oldy but it gets'em everytime.
If you have a room full of people, and don't mind collecting money $1.50 at a time, I suppose you could do well for yourself. |
