Awesome!
Looking forward to hearing the details of both once available. This has been on my wish list for a while now. Thanks for the update! |

I have owned a Mind's Eye Box for some months, and I support all of what has been written in its support on this thread. The idea is rooted in Annemann's "Devil Device" but employs a very different method, it is well made, and Paul McCaig is wonderful to work with. As Seth testified, the MEB has "no moving parts" and a performance involves "no fiddling with the box"--although performance does involve a very careful positioning of the box.
Nevertheless, I am not yet convinced that it is better than Annemann's device, which is now available from Richard Osterlind. A different method is not necessarily a better method. For instance, while the Devil device does indeed have moving parts and does require some (very manageable) manipulation, consider these virtues: Unlike the Mind's Eye Box, the Devil Device give the performer total control over when the p--k is gained AND total control over ditching the information after the p--k is gained. So, between the two comparable props, some tradeoffs are involved. Knowing what they are, some will prefer the MEB and some will prefer the DD. So in the spirit of "magicians helping magicians," I thought it might be useful to identify some of the tradeoffs that had not yet been mentioned in this thread. George |

In comparison, the MEB and the DD, and just to refine a bit of what George touched on:
While both of these creations allow similar results, the MEB allows reading in a more hands free manner as in handling can be done before and after the reading, but is not required in between the time the card is placed and the reading is acquired. The DD on the other hand, requires physical handling to achieve the end result which needs to occur after the card is placed but before the reading can be achieved. From what I can tell and have seen of the DD (video I just viewed, and the fact that the details may be located), The placement of the DD on a table with the spec directly opposite of the performer and the DD between the two is vital. After the card has been placed in the DD, handling is required. This manipulation may involve moving the box on the table. A spec at the slightest of angle other than directly in front of the box might present an issue and it is pretty much a one on one presentation unless the other spectators are at a reasonable distance (and still orientated opposite the performer). It is, in my opinion, that the DD may not give the best results if lets say you were all sitting around a table (such as some may perform in a kind of seance style sitting or small group reading). The MEB in comparison, is as Paul had mentioned earlier, a lot less angle restrictive, no moving parts, and nothing really to handle. Simple set up and go with no need to handle or move the box from its resting place. Yes, it may still have its limitations, however I feel that there are ample work arounds to truly fit a performer's style and setting. Beyond that, I feel that the new Deluxe Mind's Eye Box is even less angle restrictive, lends itself more to casual observation (when not in performance...in other words sitting on the table one can walk around it looking at it while it sits there...something that cannot be done with the DD...the DD must be in the control of the performer at all times that it is in the open), and it has more versatility (those who end up owning the original MEB and the DMEB will know what I mean). So, yes, it does I suppose, depend on your style and setting...and for some the DD is the way to go, but the MEB and DMEB will better fit others and their style. Not to mention that the MEB/DMEB may lead into other opportunities if your goal is presenting a bizarre or seance feel to your routine. In other words, there are opportunities for a performance to carry on beyond the box thinking outside the box so to speak. The first DMEB was finished a few months ago and a first batch run is currently under construction. The box is crafted from Cherry and Wenge with a natural oil rubbed finish and antiqued hardware. The inside of the box will be lined in black velvet. The DMEB will be available via Psychic Mentality ( http://www.psychicmentality.com ) formerly known as The Grismer Lock, and from Mooreni ( http://www.moorenimagic.com )...look for announcement of its release in the coming months. If you are signed up for the Mooreni Newsletter you will get to see photos of the box very soon. J.c. |

I have the MEB and have seen a personal demo of the DD. Both props have pretty serious angle issues; any differences there are modest. Both are fine when any spectator(s) is more or less in front of you. The DD does require a moment of handling; if that is a deal-breaker, MEB might be the way to do. It is also a little less expensive.

A parcel arrived within which was a stout velvet bag drawn tight at the top. I opened the bag to reveal an astonishing work of art. The new Mind's Eye Box Deluxe from JC Moore. Made from exotic wood, re-engineered, and produced to the highest quality imaginable, it has a velour coated interior, a mix of fine woods, and lovely hardware hinges and hasp. The method is enhanced by the new design, while the quality makes this a true heirloom piece to be handed down when you pass. For me, this is a memory box; a keepsake box with all those special possessions and a place where someone else's powerful memories will reveal themselves to me. JC Moore has undone himself with this product. You will not be disappointed. Watch the video and admire this fine craftsmanship. It is so strong, it closes my new show. Highly highly recommended. Since this discussion started, Magic Wagon has come out with their "Phantom Casket." Since it is a limited one-time production, it will not really compete with the MED or the DD, but it is worth mentioning while it may still be available. The PC's purpose is not identical to either of them; the mentalist cannot read a message or tell what playing card that someone puts in the box but, with casual handling, the mentalist can tell what article they placed in it. There is a moving part. I like the PC for its purpose.

WOW..... This looks really great.......
I am still happy with my minds Eye Box but have also been waiting for the deluxe box to come out. Now that it has, I have to say that the deluxe box really looks mysterious and down right spooky. It has ambiance that screams class and elegance. Best Ray |

I use my DD in parlor. I have the questions put in the box. Place the box on my table, pick up the clipboard and walk away from the table.

Hi Tony,
So you have the box on a stand like it was mention earlier? I have toyed with the idea of placing the box on a serving tray along with blank cards to write on. Before I REALLY show the tray, I pick up the stack of cards and accidentally drop part of the stack on the tray. What a mess. Hey, things happen in a live show..... I now scoop up most of the blank cards while leaving a few on the tray. So now when the person or persons place their card into the slot, I can freely show the tray from all sides if I wanted. They will see the box and a few cards that I didn't pick up earlier. When I place the tray back on my table, I place the small stack of cards that is in my hand on the tray and recap what just happen. I then reach and remove a few cards and a marker from my table and step forward to begin the readings and to answer their questions. Of course, if anyone was to come on the stage/platform, they would still see a few cards lying on the tray. (Wink) Anyway, I have played a few times with this old magic idea and it flew right over their heads. Ray |

Ray:
I bring a table to my performances where I place my materials for the event. The photo on the other post is my act from last fall. I have the audience members write their questions on the cards, then have them drop them in the box (I normally carry it over to them). I place the box back on the table. Removing the cards as I pick up the clip board (and leaving the box ready to receive the cards when I return). The cards are put in the transparent pocket on the clipboard and can be manipulated with just 1 finger. When I finish the event, I open the box and dump out the questions allowing for the to be retrieved by those who wrote the (if they wish). This shows everything as it should be and reenforces that the cards were well away from me the entire time (if they should wonder about that). Tony |

A great big thank you goes out to Dr. Todd Landman for his professional advice and personal encouragement throughout this project. From first showing him the Mind's Eye Box prototype via email and numerous Skype sessions, to his help in making the 'Deluxe' version possible, through to confirming the latin translation for v2.
We would also like to credit Iain Dunford for his input in making it feasible to add a nice subtlety to both the Deluxe model and v2, which wasn't included in the original Mind's Eye Box. Paul Mc.

Ah, cool - kind of like the version we worked on where you sent me an aged box, I texturized it around some more and put a metal plaque with a latin inscription on it next to the slot (guess mine is then the version 1.666 OOAK)

I have just bought one of these - or should I say, invested. This really is a quality item, superbly made and very practical. It is the sort of item that can enhance any set or situation. I am delighted and have already quite a few ideas lined up.
Paul was also exceptionally helpful during the order process, keeping me updated and also adding a modification. I thoroughly recommend and while I have only had it a few days, it has already received many favourable comments. One happy and very satisfied customer. Neil |

I have read through both this thread and "Mentally Speaking » » Mind's Eye Box Deluxe" so forgive me if this has been explained, but ... can you only peek the writing on the one billet going into the box, or several? I don't think for a second that you could read them all at the same time but rather if you can peek them one at a time without having to take any out in between. I.e. being able to take the box around the audience and peeking their billets as they drop them into the box.
Many thanks, Adrian |
