I'm just interested in being pointed towards some good acts. Who would people rate for close-up (not stage) mentalism? Whose acts should I be watching for inspiration and entertainment?

Unlike magic or mental magic, the only difference between close-up and stage mentalism is the size of the audience and whether or not you need a microphone. While I've seen quite a few guys who are more comfortable and effective doing close-up rather than stage, I can't really think of any opposite examples.

(The only reason I prefer large audiences is that I generally get paid more than I'd make at private party or doing walk around. Smile)

You might want to check out Docc Hilford. He has such a wonderful ability to connect with his audience and build such wonderful rapport. His DVDs are a testament to this. He gets my vote.

I should add that its his smiling and charisma that brings such an element of magical mysteriousness to his acts. I think most people underestimate the true power of a wonderful smile.

Hi dmoses:

John Archer is a very engaging performer. But his performance is so driven by his unique persona, I am having trouble identifying the lessons that are transferable from the performance style that he models. Help me out.

Watch how he handles procedure...
See how his presentation is greater than the sum of his effects...

Lior Suchard ... What a machine. I learned a lot from him about how to play it.

I agree with all the above, let me add, Bob Cassidy in there, he wont add his name in the bucket because hes too modest, but that guy is such a great mentalist and I thoroughly enjoy watching and learning from him. And also Richard Osterlind, his Live Without a Net DVD is great to see someone in a real world situation.

Consummate, charismatic, confident ... Cassidy. Excellent stuff. I can see why you're getting honoured at Mindvention.

Mr. dmoses:

Regarding #1, okay.
Regarding #2, okay, but true of effective plays, movies, speeches, novels, etc. A profoundly true, but generic, point.
Regarding #3, I have no idea what that means.

So, please understand, I am still having some difficulty identifying the lessons that are especially transferable from the performance style that Archer models.

Sorry that was a typo on my part I was quoting you
"But his performance is so driven by his unique persona"

My feeling is that that points to the problem and its cure-- it's hard being a unique performer-- especially when one is performing other people's routines and effects-- but being a unique performer is how you (have a chance to) become the "most entertaining" performer.
The people I listed offer original work that run the gamut of style.

The top 3 points could easily describe Bob Cassidy's performances, IMO.

John Archer is a Comedy Magician, isn't he? The OP asked about Mentalist routines.

From what I have seen of Archer, on his first DVD and on YouTube, he takes a comedic approach to Mentalism. I have seen him do no magic per se, except in the sense that Mentalism is a genre of Magic.
