Anybody seen this yet? A friend saw it, and highly recommended it; he said if he weren't in a hurry he would have stayed for another showing!

Tremendous movie. Showed men of courage. Not only number 42 but Branch Rickey and Leo Durocher.
Go see it. Then think about the implications of a few men of conviction and the impact they have on civilization and then go see it again.

Jackie faced especially horrendous conduct from Phillies fans and Reese, a Southerner, walked over to Jackie and put his arm around Jackie's shoulder. Reese also mentioned in an interview before the start of the 1947 season that if he lost his job to Jackie, then he would have lost it to a better player. Reese was certainly a class act; Enos Slaughter not so much. |

One of the really moving parts in the movie was when Reese talked to Branch Rickey and showed a hate letter he had gotten from someone and was worried about playing in his home town. Branch proceeded to pull 3 fat files full of threats and hate and really nasty letters directed at Jackie and basically told Reese that what he got was nothing in comparison. It was after this scene that Reese put his arm around Jackie in the game in his home town. Whether or not it really happened just like that, it was a great scene.
Really good movie. |
