I see Yigal Mesika Magic has a new Café Banner for the Tarantula on the Café homepage and the ad says he offers a full refund if you're not satisfied. You can't go wrong in trying it out with that type of guarantee. As The Café says:
Please click a banner to visit our sponsors, who ensure the Magic Café remains a free resource for all magicians! The Tarantula is an amazing device, but you HAVE to watch the DVD and learn the ins and outs of how to use it. I think you'll become a fan once you perform just one of the simple PK effects. I recently got a DVD and ITR teaching a floating ring and I didn't care for the hookup ( it wasn't practical for me ). In using the ITR, I was reminded how much I didn't care for ITR's. It's a GREAT invention, but any Pro that uses an ITR carries more than one, because when the IT breaks, you're sunk because t's time consuming to take it apart and get it working again. Not something you'll have time for at a gig. This is my hobby, but I don't want to take an ITR apart each time the IT breaks. Unlike traditional ITR's, you have absolute control over the IT in theTarantula because it's a motorized reel. And unlike ITR's, if the IT breaks, it's very simple to get going again ( pop the cap and a simple blow and the IT appears ). Nothing to attach to your collar, etc. It's in my pocket, ready to go at anytime. The Tarantula DVD teaches everything on the trailer and the routines are stunners. 1) Magic Pen: Put some static on a pen and place the pen on a table or bar, at a distance from you and make it come back to you. Can also be done with a straw. Both can be borrowed ( nothing is attached directly to them ). It's VERY easy to perform and the one I used while I got comfortable using the Tarantula . You can regulate the speed the pen/straw comes back to you. I concentrate and it moves slightly at first. A litttle more and then it comes right to me and the pen/straw can be be handed out immediately afterward. I cued up the trailer to show the pen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw-PSYupQ......be&t=53s If you borrow the pen, it's even stronger. 2) Magnetic Money: A bill ( or sugar packet ) is placed on the table or bar and it comes back to you. 3) The Hovering: The Magic Geek, Chris Ballinger, performing the Hover Ring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1wWW0ICb.......be&t=8s That's how easy it is to perform. All their attention is focused on the ring. The natural curve of your hand shades the Tarantula, so they'll never see it. You can also levitate their ring and have it hover inside a clear glass. That's the one I use. The ring floating inside the glass is an incredible moment for any audience. 4) Haunted Pack on the floor. The pack cuts and like Nick Einhorn's Spooked, the chosen card comes flying out. Reading comments after the Tarantula came out, some felt "guilty" about working with it. That same guilt causes magicians to search for the perfect TT, which is unnecessary. Getting comfortable and feeling natural with TT's is the same for the Tarantula, except the Tarantula is easier because it's hidden in the natural position of our hands. John Ramsey developed the Ramey Subtlety, which took advantage of the natural curve of the fingers to show the hand empty. Same goes for the Tarantula. Wear it for a day and go about your business while out shopping, paying for stuff, etc. Make it become part of you and you'll be able to perform miracles with it. And remember, you can customize the Tarantula. It can be trimmed, sanded and given color ( hold off on the sanding and coloring, because your hand gives such good shade, I think you'll see that isn't needed ). It's gotten rave reviews since it came out: Wayne Kawamoto from magic.about.com did a lengthy review: http://magic.about.com/b/2009/04/14/revi......sika.htm And.... “Tarantula is a wonder of technology and miniaturization…Tarantula is currently a very popular item in magic shops all over the country, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s an impressive gimmick that makes some impressive magic possible.” - John Lovick, Magic Magazine “Yigal Mesika has done it again…I’ve owned many different invisible thread retractors and spoolers over the past thirty-five years. This one is my favorite…Highly recommended.” - Bill Palmer, M-U-M Magazine |

Nice review. Thanks Zombie! Maybe I should pull the Tarantula out of the bottom drawer and "give our love a second chance"
Cheers Nikki

Nikki, did you ever do the magic pen routine? The reactions are wonderful. At first I just had the pen come back to me. But because there is no tension on the IT, you can make it move just a little bit at first and then come to you. I think it's much stronger that way.

Yes, I did this effect but there were two major problems: it was the first effect I tried with IT ever and the First reaction I got was: hey dude, you are using a string.
Since this I've become very carefully with IT work :S Don't get me wrong I totally love IT / IET effects but I perform them only very rarely... Cheers Nikki

Nikki, we've all had the same experience with IT! When we were younger and used a Svangali deck, most likely someone said it was a "trick deck" and wanted to see it. The Sevngali has turned doff more beginners from using a gaff deck than Carter has pills ( I think I just dated myself;-)
With the magic pen, I like to borrow the pen ( or have someone hand me a straw ). I put static on it first, then give it a small amount of animation first before having it return all the way to me. |

Fascinating!
Zombie, what are your thoughts re: all the very negative things people have had to say about Tarantula on the Café? It seems most any topic dealing with Tarantula is one that rips it to shreds! Based on your experience with it so far, how would you account for the differences in opinion?

But in that where magicians that performed with it and loved it. Jamie D Grant did a Magic Friday on the SPP and he said he " killed" with it. So I finally got one and agree with the rave reviews on it. I recently got the Invisible dvd and ITR and din't care for it. Others say they like and use it. All the routines shown on the Tarantula trailer are taught on the DVD and at least 2 of them are so easy, a beginner with IT can do it. But it is IT and that takes practice to get comfortable with it. |

Thanks. I remember a number of good reviews for SPP, but the comments on Tarantula seemed about universally negative.

I've gone through some older Café pages and some people didn't care for it, some liked it. Guess it's like many things in magic. One of my favorite props is Werry's Transformer. But I read Café reviews calling it junk, etc. It works for me, so I don't know what to make of the bad reviews. Some people think Shakespeare is old and boring. lol.
Wayne Kawamota liked the Tarantula ( he works professionally ) http://magic.about.com/b/2009/04/14/revi......sika.htm Corporate Magician Kipp sherry reviewed The Tarantula: http://club.magicians.com/forum/topics/r......by-yigal |

I was one that did not like it. I have seen it and played with it. Then again, I did NOT like the Sanada Gimmick either. Maybe that's what turned me off. I feel I gave it an unfair mark.
If you can make The Sanada work, the Tarantula will dovetail right in! The Ramsay Subtlety is the correct term, by the way. Yes, that is why it works! I stand corrected. The Tarantula may well be a VERY good investment. Just not MY cup of tea... Doug |

I thought most peoples' complaints were about the functionality of the unit, rather than anything else. May have to look up those topics again. Glad, though, that people are finding it useful.
When I went to Max's Magic Shop (our own Max Krause's brick and mortar store) I saw he had (at least) one in stock. He would be a good man to get one from if anyone decides they would like to purchase one.

Note that there are knock offs out there and the people complaining about the functionality might have a fake one.
I had some fun with the T for awhile. The only thing I don't like is the battery runs down so fast. But mix the T with pen and you can do some really cool stuff. Randi |

Kind of late to the party but I had so much success with my Spider pen pro I took the plunge and bought a Tarantula. Also after Zombie's great review I had to get one. He is THE thread Master.
I love this thing! I bought some cheap light stainless steel rings from ebay and I do the floating ring now all the time. I also use a coin shell nickel or a plastic coin to make it fly up into my hands. So different from the Spider pen pro. I might carry BOTH!! Actually I am going to buy another Tarantula so if the line breaks, I will be ready with a backup. I also just change the spool now in seconds. The reactions are just crazy. Really great little tool. I've had my eye on this one too. Heard mixed things but Zombie's review is certainly helping me get off the fence.
Now, I do have Invisible and love it. It was the first trick I ever did with IT/ITR and it basically got me back into magic. But it seems as though with Tarantula, I'll be able to do a bit more since the inevitable question after floating the ring from Invisible is "what else can you float"?! |

Does it require a noisy environment for cover? Easy to get in and out of as far as the hookup? Never did much thread work. Only fixed some socks here and there. Thanks. John |
