I think, and this is just my experience that it is really about the routine and how it is presented. As I said Don Alan had moves from Pressley Guitar, but his continual patter and story line really gave not time for analyzing the trick. The pierced cigarette was displayed inches from the spectator's eyes. Everything kept moving after the penetration and until the finish where the cigarette was removed and the hole healed under their noses. Don also laid the "Quarter" on the spectator's hand, and placed the burning lit cigarette on the Quarter. It gave a wonderful reason why the cigarette could penetrate the coin, "Softened Metal".
Don Alan also says he kept people quarters, with a tag line that fits perfectly. I later came up with the old vanishing cigarette pull for the climax. I would place the coin in my pocket and then place the borrowed cigarette in my fist. The Cigarette Vanished, and it was a great climax. The people would always be looking for the lite cigarette all over the floor and some would even try to get into my pockets. I did not mind when they were attractive girls. They were so concentrated on where the cigarette went, that they forgot all about their quarter and trick. They only wanted to know where the cigarette. So I would pull the quarter out of my pocket and place it on their hand. Come to think of it, I should have had the "Nest of Boxes" ready and Climaxed with that, as they were not ready to leave until they found the burning cigarette. I just had never thought of an additional place to discover the coin. So over 30 plus years later, I think of a "kicker" way to finish the trick. Slow creator I guess. I finally retired the trick, when instead of wide eyes, I only would get "THAT SINKS" from the smell of the cigarette. I just don't remember cigarettes stinking that bad years ago, I think the tobacco have put something in the cigarettes to make them smell bad. As today, I can even smell the very strong stench. |

There is an interesting cigarette to bill on page 102 of _Scarne's Magic Tricks_. I don't smoke, so I never tried it, but the effect sounds startling:
-----quote----- EFFECT: A cigarette is soaked in water and then rolled between the hands. The cigarette disappears and a dollar bill appears in its place. -----end quote----- The Scarne book has some hidden gems as well as classic effects. I think it is an underrated text that is great for beginners and has some classic effects that even seasoned pros could use or tweak for their acts. The same is true of his book of card tricks. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Sonny,
I wonder if this was the trick mentioned above? Bill, Don Alan was a superior performer... no question. But, I'll stand behind my switch any day. All actions are motivated and justified. The coin is held between the tips of the thumb and first finger. There is no hand to hand changing of the coin. The hand holding the coin does not move, nor do any of the fingers of that hand. The coin stays in the same position the entire time, and most people would swear it never leaves sight (even though it does for about a half a second). I NEVER kept the quarter. Regardless of whose quarter it was, everyone wanted to see it and handle it afterward. Why rob them of that? Nobody ever asked where the "other" quarter was, because none of them suspected a switch was even possible. I simply told them it was an optical illusion and they then convinced themselves that they had just seen something that did not really happen. Pretty strong place to be, IMO. The cigarette vanish is definitely a good finish to a cigarette routine. I was always careful though, not to let that ending overshadow the cigarette through quarter effect. It was simply too strong to be stepped on. I never used the vanish (or any trick) to divert attention away from the cigarette or the quarter. I did however find out that it was far better to vanish the cigarette and remain with the group to do other tricks. I used to do it to close my set, thinking it made a good and logical ending... until one night as I was leaving the table, I heard someone say, "He's going to go put out that cigarette." Of course I was using a TT, and that was not the case, but it made me realize that other people may be thinking the same without saying so. But placed in the middle of the act, it really began to bother people wondering why I was not catching on fire. Ha! Well, one night I did catch on fire, but that's a different story for a different time! ~michael

Much of what was published in the _Scarne's Magic Tricks_ book was standard stuff, so your uncle might have found the same cigarette trick elsewhere.
One of the things that Scarne tried to do with his two magic books was publish a book of tricks that required no sleight of hand or--if the "public domain trick" required a sleight, to re-work it so that it was practically self-working. He succeeded in that aim remarkably. I think Scarne tended to exaggerate when claiming that certain tricks/effects were his invention. In his autobiography he tells the story of how he did a card trick for Houdini and fooled Houdini so badly that Houdini told him, "Johnny, if Margery had done that trick, I would not have been able to explain it!" If you read the description of the card trick in Scarne's _The Amazing World of John Scarne_, it sounds pretty much just like Brainwave, which Dai Vernon published in _The Jinx_ back in the 30's. ----- Sonny

I opened a close-up segment at the Houdini Club Convention with Eugene Burger's "Cocaine Cigarette" and it went over well.
I agree with STANYON'S post regarding AEROBIC, but it may be hard to find...... I've been doing John Cornelius's "flash paper to cigarette" bit for dozens of years, and it kills, but I don't know if it's in print anywhere...KILLER bit....and simple..... |
