So I've been writing a script for a new show of mine and I am stumped on how to continue. This particular show features my assistant and myself doing several classic stage tricks, and some if my own design. My stage and illusion show runs for about 35 minutes. It is a skit of a cop and robber chase around the stage through and around many illusions. I want the second half of my show to be all mentalism and manipulation. My hangup is that...well... I don't know the first thing about mentalism. If anyone would like to contact me with advice or trick suggestions just PM me or email jqe97@verizon.net. Any help would be appreciated, o am scheduled to perform in November.

I would perform the magic and work over time on the mentalism. It could take years. It's nothing to clown around about.

Perhaps you should add juggling and manipulation to the second half of the show rather than mentalism and manipulation. You could learn to juggle entertainingly much faster than learning to perform mentalism and make it entertaining and it would fit your persona better.
I mean no disrespect. It is better not to take "shotgun"approach to your show. Try to keep a consistency to your character. If you must do "mentalism" make it a comedy farce. Just saying.

Perhaps we could give you better ideas if we saw your website and what you do. Do you have a website?

Lanky T. Clown,
hey bro its cool that you are putting a new act together. I hope it turns out well for you. I would suggest a change of heart on the second half being mental... think back on how long it took you to build your magic skills. now triple it for mentalism. with magic you rely on a prop and some slights to do the magic and your personality is what makes it a miracle. with mentalism it is a whole new skill set. you will have to unlearn all you know about magic performance as it will never fit in a mental act. the magicians guilt will kill you first. mentalism takes years to master, to make it presentable to a paying audiance. as does any art. again best of luck on the new act bro! |

I can understand why people above say they began to type, but changed their mind.
The question I am posing is, how would you perform mentalism in such a scripted show? There is absolutely no point doing any mind reading effects on another "actor" in your show. The whole point is to choose volunteers from the audience. Unless you consider mentalism in the form of PK effects, or some predictions which use assistants from the audience. That could be a possibility.

After jumping through illusions and tricks in what sounds like a Keystone Kops skit, how do you suppose your "mentalism" will be perceived by the audience?
Or let me put it this way- what exactly do you perceive mentalism to be? And if you know nothing about mentalism, WHY are you writing a show for this November that will feature you doing mentalism? That makes about as much sense as me deciding which pieces I'm going to play at a concert I've already booked, and then asking someone to show me how to play the piano. (I'm kind of hoping that you're just having some fun with us.) |

Mentalism and manipulation in the second half! That's gotta be a wind up, and a pretty good one too

Then it will be great if you can add some hypnosis You show will be the best one so far. I hope it helps Magician helping magician. Don't listent these angry people! I think it can work if you theme it into a dark carnival of mystery.... Humour at first that slowly moves into nightmare.... Shifting from no audience active involvement on stage to slowly using more and more interactivity.... Showing fun illusions that grow in seriousness... You will need a point or goal to all of it if course.... To why you are moving towards mentalism... The concepts being from outside to the inner mind,.... And leave everyone mind fried....

Seeing as you are a "Lanky Clown" - How bout the 2nd half of your show you let your assistant walk on stilts from the back of the room, then when he/she gets up towards you, everybody will notice that he /she is in fact Huge! All the while you have "War of the Worlds" playing in the back ground.
This will be very visual and atmospheric for your audience, all the while, it will maintain your credibility as a Magician and a Mind Reader! For your closing act you could produce a "Mind Reading" Rabbit from your hat! If you want any more ideas you can mail me on stoptakingthepisslanky@foff.com

A Russian Roulette routine that determines which seltzer bottle gets squirted down the front of your pants.
A Mental Epic where you force the word "pie" and then get one in the face at the climax. Balloons are tossed out into the audience and one spectator is selected. It is shown that only her balloon contains a piece of paper that has accurately predicted which parts of your anatomy have been hit by a paint-gun wielding monkey (and by what color paint). |

Dr Spektor's 'Something wicked this way comes' dark carnival actually sounds like a show I'd like to watch ... It's certainly up there with a King in Yellow performance.
