The solution to the puzzle is the mathematical principle that just because angles look to be the same doesn't mean that they really are.

The apparent similarity also shows that the effect is, in a sense, a form of optical illusion.

To those of you who say that pieces are added and/or taken away, of course they could be.
But that just makes it a TRICK. What makes it a PUZZLE is that you end with the exact same pieces that you started with. Nothing more, nothing less. You can do this naked in a totally empty room with nowhere to hide anything. Not that you'd want to. It's quite interesting. If anyone still has doubts about it, PM me and send me $20 via PayPal and I'll send you a 7" by 9" cardboard mock up with instructions telling you how to place and move the pieces around. Then you will be convinced. I'll keep reading what people have to say here, but I'm done posting. Nothing more to say about it. :bat: |

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Yes, I think the "explanation" is ridiculous. The "lining up" is not a problem, and the "explanation" contradicts itself in the firs 20 seconds or so.
It's a bit like what James Randi says about spoon bending: maybe it is done with the mind, but that would be the hard way.

You mean there are YouTube videos that give incorrect or misinformed information about illusions and stuff?

The point, I believe, is that the cut losses are insignificant to the working of the puzzle.

Maybe a laser?
Or it was cut allowing for the lost wood shavings. You know, the saw blade is 1/16th inch thick, so add 1/16th inch more before cutting. I am not knowledgeable about that stuff, but how do they produce scotch and soda coins with a perfect fit? Certainly not with a saw. And what Magnus said above is true. I know I said I wouldn't post here again, but I had to. Sorry for lying about that! :bat: |

And, just to try and prove my point, the two large pieces that are not cut up and down (as we are viewing it) line up exactly with the 4 smaller pieces that have been cut three times up and down as we are viewing it (4 pieces require 3 cuts). How would that happen if what you are saying is true?
I'm going with a laser. This is 2013, after all. But I don't know. :bat: |

Make up a model out of stiff paper using a good straight edge and a scissor (or eXacto knife). Still works with no "sawdust" involved.
Also, many versions of the illusion, such as the "Get off the Earth" and "Vanishing Leprechaun" puzzles don't involve cutting at all. |

This makes no sense as far as I can see. The kerf you are talking about happens before the pieces are used. 'Kerf' no longer exists.

Thanks, Michael!
Trust me- Michael knows what he is talking about. There may be a version that switches pieces in and out. But there is a BETTER version which requires none of that. It just works. :bat: |

Going back to the OP, the. original question had to do with the Youtube video and I responded with the subsequent "exposure." Then it got off onto the tangent. At this point I have no doubt that there are multiple performances of this effect and that the Youtube video is exactly what I meant it to be at the beginning, exposing the trickery in the presentation.

Here's a very nice interactive webpage that illustrates the distribution principle. There's no explanation unfortunately, but since it involves no physical cutting you can see that it's really all about the geometry of the imperfect fit along the long diagonal. The Freer puzzle we have been discussing however incorporates one extra deception that makes it hard for people to realize that the rectangle before really does have a larger area than the apparently same size rectangle produced afterwards.
