I am 58 years old.
I had a cocker spaniel about 50 years ago. (I also had some cats and a box of mice.) I had a German Shepard about 40 years ago. I had a toy poodle about 30 years ago. Haven't had a dog since then. Didn't want anything after Frankie. Right at this moment, the family has... multiple cats. I don't own any of them, I just feed them and clean up the cat box But I guess in their own way, they're adorable.

Books on dogs are good. I had a Bullmastiff years ago and I bought a book on the breed and it was amazingly accurate with regard to it's description of it's character etcetera.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

While Service Dogs are legally not "pets," when you take off their harness and they are not "working" they become more than pets. I have a Collie and my wife a Shelty. Here previous Sheltie was inducted into the Tennessee Hall of Fame and recognized as the best trained dog in Tennessee. Yet, she was a loving and close companion beyond any such training. My Collie is a natural healer -- nestling close to anyone who is ill and taking away their disease.
When working they are tuned into our disabilities and provide assistance without asking -- and a joy to all who know them. I was never a "dog person" before marrying Emmie. Now I cannot image a life without these two. Alas they are so short lived. What would they be capable of if they lived a human life span? I am training the Sheltie to perform Conjury and Mentalism effects like her predecessor. Strangely, an audience will accept Branwen's ability to read minds over that of a human.

I love animals - even the unpopular ones like snakes, sharks, etc. One of the worst periods in my life was when I was staying with a friend for three months after I had gone through a divorce. He HATED animals. It was the first and to dat only time in my life in which I did not share my life with any animals. As soon as I got my own flat, I adopted two cats from a shelter and life felt complete again.
Now I have a collie/shepherd mix named Diva, two cats - Sparky and Noodles, and I think 18 koi in a koi pond in the garden. In my faith we believe that animals and infants are the last vestiges of Eden. No matter how bad a day I might have had, when I come home, my dog and two cats are there at the door and it is wonderful. I am in America right now and I really miss them all - even the koi! My pets are really my "kids." In fact, I don't like the word "pet." Funsway, I too wish that dogs (and cats) lived longer lives and I too cannot imagine life without them. Mr. Cassidy, your comment about cats is true! Remember the saying "Dogs have owners; cats have staff"? I believe THAT is one of the universal "Truths" and nonetheless I love them. Here's a cat story cat people will understand. When my daughter was with her boyfriend, they had two cats. An older one whose name I cannot recall (and is still around) and Nightcrawler (a.k.a. "Bampf" a.k.a. "Meat Brick" - but only by me, it used to drive my daughter crazy when I used either name.
Nightcrawler had the run of the apartment building. I would come visit and find him wandering the halls or on a platform between the two stairs. One day he came down sick, coughed up blood for a couple of days and died. They (my daughter and her boyfriend) believed he was poisoned. About three weeks later, I was walking my daughter back to her apartment (because she didn't like walking through this neighborhood at night.) I got her in the apartment and up to the apartment door when a ratty looking grey cat (almost still a kitten but not quite) came down the stairs from the upper level and started leg bumping my daughter. She chucked the cat under the chin and put it back on the stairs. This went on for three days before the cat made her intentions clear by slipping into the apartment as my daughter opened the door. They took her to a vet, had problems taken care of and this scrawny cat, now named "Chi" has taken them on as her new staff! Chi is also insane, if you believe in reincarnation, I think Chi used to be a pirate's parrot. She loves nothing better than to jump up on your shoulders while your back is turned.

Which magicians treat their doves or rats as pets? I know Alex Ramon kisses his doves as he handles them. I'm sure Fielding West treats Bob the Bird almost like a child! Lance Burton has 'Petey' the white rat he includes in cups and balls! Loved funsway's and George1953's posts about including their pets in magic. I had a rabbit named Bea, but alas we had to give her away, living in an apt; and didn't even have her long enough to pull her out of a hat. (yes, I miss her, I thought of her much more than a magical prop!) Lynn

As an aside to my post above, I picked up a one gallon or so fishbowl at a thrift shop a few days ago for two dollars because I've always thought a fish or two in a bowl would be a pleasant, soothing thing to have around the house. Today I went to a local pet supplies place seeking decorations and a fish or two and I came across a beautiful creature called a Betta fish otherwise known as Siamese Fighting Fish. It appealed to me because they apparently don't need the water changed as frequently because they apparently surface to take air in, thus not depleting O2 on the water. But I could only get one. It seems they are vicious and will attack and kill their own kind. So I bought just one. I could have put a few other different species in with it, but they would reqire more frequent water changes. Anyway, he/she is a fun little thing to observe and quite striking in a deep orange flourescent color. We've named him/her Vicious. I'm already attached to the creature.

Bob1Dog,
They are amazing looking fish - it's years since I've had one - make that decades actually - but while I hate to add to anyone's chores - they do actually need the water just as clean as other tank fish - not for breathing but because they're susceptible to disease from a dirty tank. |

It's honestly decades since I kept fish and I wasn't very good at it then, so I'd think there'd be forums where people who keep them discuss such things and they'd give better advice than me - I'm currently gardening crazy and am having so much more success with it than ever before because of the access to knowledge on the internet. Gardeners are very generous with their knowledge.

The biggest threat to Bettas is overfeeding. Uneaten food is home to fungi that will destroy those beautiful Betta fins.

We have two cats - Frankenstein is my roommate's cat and mine is called Harry Blackstone. He's black with white paws and a white belly, so he's wearing his tuxedo full time.
He's currently working on Twisting the Aces and he's become quite good at it. I've also had numerous dogs and other cats as well as fish and a small turtle. My life, like many here, has been much richer due to my pets.

We have 2 dogs. A Black Lab/Huskie mix named BlackJack and a White West Highland Terrier named Murphy. BlackJack is a certified therapy dog and he is the resident magician at our local hospital. With a little help from me, he performs magic tricks for patients, visitors and staff.

We have 2 boxers. Brindle in color. I will post video later. Amazing dogs. I train dogs when I have time. They are the best teained most spoiled dogs ever.
That don't eat people food and have never found an animal they won't play with. Love people and onlt bark when necessary. But if you want the best spot on the couch...move the dog. They are loveable but if you get cross of my wife you will have an 80 and a 50 pound ball of teeth fur and claws thar will not stop. Nicest dogs in the world till they don't have to be. We had a fawn boxer (tan) that had cancer. She beat it and died from a fatal congenital heart isse days agter beating cancer. I told my wife when we bought them we are purchasing minor tragedies. It is the truth. I will post video of them. My mom has a 1/2 Siberian Husky 1/2 Wolf that is the coolest dog. I got her an Australian Laberdoodle. They are smaller and her skin is blue. Yes leave it to Aussie tech to have blue dogs. The Australian Shepard has it as well. This dog is all heart. 25 pounds of hwart. She lays in the wolves mouth and bites his face. He doesn't care. Yea get me talking about dogs.

I have to disagree with you Danny - my dog is the most superspoiledest ever.
He steals the beautiful plump sweet homegrown strawberries out of the garden, and I forgive him and content myself with bland shop bought fruit. |
