Hi,

Can someone tell me how to find or reset my username and password for my desktop computer's (PC on cable) wireless router? I had a computer repair place hook up the new router last year, and now I'd like for vistors to be able to use their tablets, laptops, etc., and my son wants to network his PS3.

I have no idea how to find that info.

Thanks!

It's often on the back of the router itself. The password is sometimes listed as the WEP key, it's a mixture of numbers and letters. The user id is often the network name.

What brand of router is it? Do you know if there is an admin password?

On a not-so-very-related note, my wireless router started making a hissing, or sizzling sound. Still doing it - I've got to get to the store to buy another one. Keep forgetting.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

It's a Cisco Linksys. Only found serial number on the router. No idea what the admin PW might be (if there is one). That's the kind of stuff I'm trying to find out.

Michael,
I hope I can help here with some pointers to where to find the info you need. If you do a net search for "wireless router reset password linksys", some pretty reputable links come up; here are a few:

http://www.tech-faq.com/linksys-router-password.html
http://technicallyeasy.net/2008/01/how-t......ireless/

This may help, I hope. If you end up resetting the security info on your router, and create a new password, you'll probably have to re-enter that password at the wireless devices trying to connect to it.

Best,
Larry S.

PS: Just to add to the above - the above procedures help you reset the security for the router 'account', giving you access to the router. You may then need to change the password for the WEP or WPA type encryption used for the wireless accounts; that's the password you enter at a wireless device to access the router. I hope that makes some sense...

IN your browser, type the address 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.

This should take you to the dialog for controlling your router. If it does not, try 192.168.0.1

When you get to the dialog, sign in.

To log in, leave the username blank and type

admin

for the password.

That is what the linksys defaults are from the factory. If you are lucky, no one has changed them.

From there, you should have wizards to walk you through any changes you'd like to make.

Let us know how it works out.

It's all pretty confusing to me. I've had that Cisco set-up page opened before but can't make heads or tails of it. Last thing I want to do is muck it all up. I'll read through those tech sites later.

Thanks guys.

Michael, I had similar router problems earlier this year and Verizon is my provider. I simply phoned them, talked to their tech support and they walked me through the whole thing. It was a painless process. Try calling your provider and see what happens. Good luck.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

On a lighter note, I've noticed that when I am driving around and my phone is searching for a wireless network, the name "FBI Surveillance Van" comes up - this has happened several times in different areas. I'm thinking this is a joke name that people give their wireless router, but who knows?

Michael, if all else fails there is a small hole in the mplate of your router. Stick in a paperclip and it will reset and you can enter whatever passwords you want -- or it will not work at all ;-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrQZFOjejKc <--- a youtube video of how to

or

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/route......word.htm <--- 5 step procedure

Anytime I need to reinstall everything on my computer or if a lighting storm resets my router, I always need to re-learn how to set up and make it secure. I always rely on google to find me the step by step instructions. There are many out there, and some are easier than others.

Hope these help.
