I think the 12" Di Fatta stainless steel rings are very nice. I should have gone with 10" rings but I could not find them at the time. And may I add, I think that Levent's DVD set is one of the nicest pieces of recorded instruction I know of.

PORPER'S LOCKING/UNLOCKING IS AMAZING see video at http://pete-biro.com/tricks/
Scroll down a bit. The L opens just when you TAP the ring with another. It is a mechanical marvel.

I am reminded to mention, that in addition to Levent's DVDs, I have been studying Mr. Pete Biro's excellent recent book on the subject, which is thorough, clear, and illuminating.

HI Bill~
We have a slight miscommunication! Let me try to clarify! First, I've never used the k** that Klamm made. (Same basic problem that you had). I'll sell my Klamm (bought at a ring auction)if I can find it, CHEAP!!! As I've said above, When Abb and I looked over the set, it took us five minutes to locate the k**. The action of opening and closing was good (well, not like Porper's which Pete mentions above, but good. (It was the "standard" method) I could have nicked with a file, next to the appropriate spot, but the marking pen, as Kit Higginson notes, was sufficient. For a month or so, it was necessary to re-do the marking as needed. After some use (3 times a day for about six weeks, the j***t wore a bit and I, knowing what to look for, could locate it easily. Once I found it, I opened it. I was 'home free' as I never let go of it, or relocked it until just BEFORE the climax. --That's one of the reasons that I liked Karrell's routine, It was so practical! Once the spectator (99% of the time a girl or young lady)had examined all three rings (!!!!!!) (a Faucett Ross idea)I could link, unlink, then have her link and unlink! Then I had all three in my hands, and surreptitiously linked the three, locked the k**, and hung them on her arm. When she picked them up, they were linked. I apparently couldn't get them unlinked. With her holding one and me holding two, we unlinked them and styled for applause. The whole routine averaged four minutes. This was one of the strongest routines I did for high schools. In my book, I'll tell the story of Roy Mayer (who pioneered, as far as I know, the 3 ring routine. Roy got the basic routine from Ed Marlo when Ed lectured on St. Louis in the '40s. Roy and Joe Scott worked on it, I have Roy's original hand written routine. I saw him do it in a school show in Virginia in 1952. When playing a high school, Roy would close with it. Backstage, he would toss the rings on his closed prop case lid, while he put on his overcoat. Kids on the stage crew could see the rings--and saw NOTHING! Roy fooled 'em during the show, AND--AFTER THE SHOW! I hope this helps~

If the Porper ring un***ks with a light tap as shown in the video on Pete Biro's page, how is it guaranteed that when the rings are examined by a spectator it doesn't get tapped, either by accident or purposely?
There was nothing too smooth about the moves in that video. If a sharped-eyed spec saw that tap, I bet that would be the first thing he'd try to do if he got the chance. But even if it was hidden in a nice routine, the chances of the rings being tapped together accidentally seems to be quite high.

You don't let a spectator have control... a bit of management is all you need.

Well, the OP's question was about "affordable" rings and soon it got into Auke Van Dokkum and Joe Porper's l**king k** rings, neither of which is "affordable" or even necessary.
With a "bit of management" one can be completely convincing with a k** like mine that you could drive a truck through.

Absolutely right CJ!
As mentioned above, when I first did the rings in the early '70s, I used a 5 ring routine--it played well from the first day. (I give the rings a major part of the credit! --classic effect-- Within a week or two, it was playing so well, I could close the high school program with it! I was using Merv Taylor 10" rings. (heavy!) When I saw Karrell's routine, I saw 2 less rings, and 8" (less weight)! I called Owen to see if they still made 8" rings (and an 8" lock). Bill told me that they couldn't make up ONE 8" lock! They would need to make a 'whole bunch' because it meant buying a quantity of stock. So I searched and found the set mentioned above. (and that set of 11 8" rings (including an o'size and an un***size + a lock** was $50 (1978). I suppose that set would be $100 today. 723 SABRE, I999 (above post) mentions that FAB has a good set, but he doesn't mention price. I know Rick Fischer, and he is a nice guy. I would think the OP should call and check it out. When I began performing, in the mid '40s. the catalogs were FULL of DOLLAR PROPS!!! A decent motel room was $5.00! You could get a good sirloin steak dinner, with coffee and a dish of icecream for dessert for less than $3.00! I am now shocked to see $50 card tricks!

Myself, having done the rings for years (Ken Brooke Method), I never had a l**king k**. Never needed one. And today, if I was serious about it, I'd buy the Owens. Affordable doesn't cut it. I'd save for the best I could find. That's just me, though. The sound of the rings is just as important as the look.

Chris Capehart has a dynamite three ring routine that kills. After a show I asked him if I should get an expensive set for the sound or a less expensive set for the effect. His response was, "Get the cheap ones, it's all in the performance." I never forgot what he said.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

One of the rings is flaked and other has a visible welding point even with the chrome plating over (That's what you get for sticking with your own classics, hah!). Neither are visible from stage, tho. Also, I personally prefer heavier rings. I've grew used to this and I feel that a set of heavy rings such as mine forces me to do more delicate and precise sleights. |

I will be seeing Rick Fisher when I am in Colon next month and will be looking at his new 15 inch rings, in particular for Whit's 4-ring routine.
