The Vatican library is now being digitized--40 million pages:

Quote:
With 2.8 petabytes of storage from global data company EMC, the Vatican Library had to decide where to begin. In all, said [project director Luciano] Ammenti, the collection will take 43 petabytes of storage.

“We start with the most delicate, the books that are in a critical situation for conservation.”

They include the Vatican’s 8,900 incunabula (books printed before 1501): the Sifra, a Hebrew manuscript written a millennia ago, a 4th century manuscript of the Greek Bible and the De Europa of Pope Pius II, printed around 1491.

“This is our dream, to give all the world access to our manuscripts,” Ammenti said.

“People often think the Vatican Library is a place where secrets are kept,” said Timothy Janz, scriptor graecus or specialist in Greek paleography, philology and history.

Once digitization opens the library to the world, rather than just to 200 scholars at a time in Rome, “many things that remain to be discovered will be found,” said Janz.

Ammenti’s staff of 15 digital archivists can, on a good day, scan one page a minute once all the equipment is in place. Because of the intensity of the process, however, they only work directly on the manuscripts for four and a half hours, he said.

I certainly hope that won't happen Danny - and I am speaking from my perspective in the Russian Orthodox Church - I converted to Orthodoxy from Roman Catholicism. I think it is wonderful that The Vatican is digitizing the library. At university I had a history professor who actually was one of the very few who held a Vatican card. He would tell us of all the great works to be found there.

Many people forget that The Roman Catholic Church actually preserved knowledge; if it wasn't for the arduous labors of those monks during the Middle Ages, we may not have the works of Plato and Aristotle available today.

The Roman Catholic Church does so much good and it saddens me that because of a very small number of bad priests, the whole Church has to take a bad rap. The Roman Church has the second largest health care system in the United States, some of the very best universities, and Catholic Charities will help ANYONE regardless of their faith or lack thereof.

I have a good vibe about Pope Francis and we in the East are optimistic. The fact that the Patriarch of Moscow attended the installation Mass for Pope Francis - something which has never happened - and the fact that Pope Francis asked the Patriarch rather than one of the Cardinals to bless the dinner represents significant steps for West and East to heal the almost 1,000 year rift between the churches.

Namaste,
Vlad

Oh it happens here regularly. Those with an axe to grind will be here to cherry pick history and make accusations. Just wait a second.

I think it's great that the library, one of the greatest repositories in history, is being digitized.

No axe to grind here.

This is great. I hope it's freely accessible.

The bashing would have to continue.

As a lover of old books and libraries I am very excited to see where this is going.

I'd end up dead if I got into that library - I'd never want to stop to eat or sleep - just read.

I've been so excited about this since first hearing about it.

My best friend from my very first year of school is an Anglican priest - he, his wife and myself have agreed on a fight to the death if there's ever a chance of one person being allowed in - and people think we readers are such passive people. Smile
