I found the film moderately fun in a check-your-brain-at-the-door kind of way. As a film person, I am interested in the fact that (some) people find the main characters unsympathetic.
It is introduced fairly early on (and in reviews so, no spoiling here) that they are (supposed to be) Robin Hood type characters, which would imply goodness. Although they are shady, I think that each of the four magicians is introduced doing something relatively sympathetic so that we will forgive their later transgressions. Anyway, I find it interesting to think about how characters earn sympathy and support from audiences, and it seems like other entertainers here think about that kind of thing too. |

JonBarr, I found the Woody Harrelson character unsympathetic because it wasn't a Robin Hood set-up: true, he got revenge on the cheating husband, but the money went to himself--that's a no-no. The money should have found its way back to the wife or some needy people to keep my sympathy, otherwise it's just extortion. Likewise, the Jesse Eisenberg character doesn't treat his groupie very well; and the young apprentice magician again ends up with the money in his own pocket. To my mind they were interesting characters, but not particularly sympathetic. From the very beginning each of them (except, perhaps, the woman) was established as a selfish character. (Of course, none of us know of any selfish magicians...) Verisimilitude in this instance trumped necessary audience identification, in my opinion.

Spoiler alert: this movie is so-so. I went with very low expectations, but they were still too high. As Danny D mentioned, if the movie didn't have a "magic" connection to it, I doubt I would have liked it even a little bit.

Just another take on it, or rather using it to help fuel our own magic...

So, I have to ask: if we weren't involved in the art *in some way*, would this movie inspire us to be interested in magic? After all, here in the stix the local magicians are all thought to be either clowns or birthday-party performers - those who want to grow up to be illusionists are still fighting the fact that 'entertainment' here is either country music or hockey...and those of us who are truly artists within magic are simply starving artists, because we're not following the stereotype and working for peanuts.
Now, having ranted, I must point out the obvious: it is a movie, where the plot surrounds magic, or involves magic. Either way, it is only a movie, and the opinions (harsh or otherwise) of those who liked/didn't like it are taken with as large a grain of salt as the movie itself... P.S.: screenplay/story written by one "Ed Solomon" - is that our own Ed? Lee |

Dean Carnegie of The Magic Detective, has his own take on the movie and the loved the Isla Fisher character of the female escape artist, The Great Henley Reeves. He looks forward to a sequel where he feels she should get a larger role.
Of her portrail he says, "When I saw the movie Now You See Me, I did not think for one second that Henley Reeves was a 'magician's assistant'. She struck me as the archetype for female magicians. Her character was confident, in control, engaging, smart and totally believable. Isla Fisher played her perfectly. And she apparently had a pretty good coach. She studied with a real professional female magician Dorothy Dietrich. I was not aware of this when I saw the movie. But I'm certain that studying with someone who has done magic and escapes for a living made all the difference in her portrayal, as frankly, the most magical of the four magicians in the movie. According to Isla, she also studied all the video footage available on Houdini. I can't help but wonder if there might be a Now You See Me 2 down the road. IF there is a NYSM2, I hope Henley gets a bigger part in the movie!!! She is awesome...... And perhaps, Henley will inspire a new generation of females to explore the world of magic in the same way that magic movies and TV specials inspired so many of us!" for more go to http://www.themagicdetective.com/2013/07......ves.html He has a great site relating to Houdini and magic history.

This movie doesn't come out until august in Australia, I definitely want to see this on the big screen!
I am surprised the boards aren't blowing up about this movie. There seemed to be more talk about Burt Wonderstone. I would say all magicians should take their friends to see this movie, its looks great. Maybe our lay friends might enjoy this movie more than us, but that might be the point. |

The female star of the movie, Isla Fisher, keeps giving interviewS saying she used the life and work of magician escape artist Dorothy Dietrich in preparing for the role.

I watched this movie twice on the weekend
![]() Is it implausible? Yup. Is most of the magic 'faked'? Probably. Is it fun? Sure is It makes me laugh and roll my eyes when people say this movie is implausible, and then bring up Ocean's 11 as a plausible movie. If someone says that, I question whether they have actually seen Ocean's 11, or just don't remember it. Don't get me wrong, O11 is an AWESOME movie, but it's about as implausible as they come. So is NYSM. And I loved every implausible second. |

I loved it. As brain candy, it was delicious.
Here is a 29-minute live performance of mine: https://youtu.be/lq2Rj1uf05M I used to be quite sensitive to criticism; I am much less so now; so, please do criticize my technique, presentation, and posts. It helps me to grow, and I promise to take responsibility and not to be defensive. |
