Hello all,
I am new to silk magic (but not to magic... been doing it for over 20 years as a hobbyist) and I like it very much. I want to learn as much as I can and have Hugard's Silken Secrets as well as Rice's Through the Dye Tube. I also am fortunate enough to have copies of Rice's Encyclopedia, volumes 1 and 3 in the 1980's reprints. I do not have volume 2 in this printing and am looking for help from anyone with suggestions on how to track down the 1980's reprint of volume 2. I called Andy Greget who suggested I contact Hank Lee's family thinking they may have some because he apparently was connected with the reprints somehow. I don't have any contact info, though. Anyone have any suggestions on where I can find this printing of volume 2? I think these are some of the most strikingly gorgeous books I've ever seen and I'm hoping to find a nice copy in really good condition with the dustjacket to match my others. Thank you! |

Sounds like you have 2 volumes from the Hank Lee reprint. Hank Lee took it upon himself to republish the 3 volumes from Rice and add the 4th volume to the set. The 4th volume does not contain promised material from Harold Rice for many years, it is other material Hank Lee decided to publish. Don't know if any dealers are carrying the books, I did see some offer the CD version of all 4 Volumes in PDF format, again this was from Hank Lee also.
http://themagicwarehouse.com/DV4933/Ency......-CD.html I don't know of any dealers selling the books, you might do an extensive search. As you may know, Hank Lee is in prison for some time, so I don't know if the family is wholesaling any of the products Hank Lee made and handled. Rice Silk King Studio's now being run by Harold Rice's daughter only has some original volume 3 left on stock. |

Thank you for your help, Bill. I have heard the CD contains lots of typos and isn't a good representation of the books due to the difficulty of a computer recognizing the hand lettering.
I haven't seen volume 2 at any dealers although I called a few around the country and there are some proprietors looking for this volume for me in their estate purchases and flea markets. I understand the connection with Hank Lee now, so I appreciate you clearing that up for me, Bill. I know Hank Lee is doing his time right now... sad that the whole thing happened in the first place. Onward in my quest for this printing of volume 2! |

Fritz,
Keep looking. It took me a while to find all of my Rice's volumes. They do come up on Ebay, Amazon, and on H&R Books occasionally. David |

Thanks for the encouragement, David. I will keep on keeping on and hopefully match my set. The journey is sometimes more fun than the destination!

I purchased volumes 1 & 2 on eBay, volume 3 a new copy and a new copy of Vol 4 at Morrissey Magic on a trip to Toronto last summer.

The Fritz, I may be stating the obvious, but have you posted in the books for sale or trade forum here? Lots of folks post wtb (want to buy) notices as well as offering items tfor sale. Especially since you are trying to locate a particular volume from a specific printing, it might help to let others who are looking to sell know that you are looking to buy ... I only did a cursory search but I did not see your request out there.

Thank you, Motley Mage. That's a good idea. I'm on your wavelength because that was the first thing I thought of. I posted in that section about three or four days ago but no response so far so I decided in addition to that, to ask in this section to see if maybe anyone had any ideas I wasn't thinking of or trying. Thanks so much guys... you are all really helpful and I appreciate your thoughts!
