I just watched a documentary about Alcatraz and I had an epiphany. With all the fuss about Guantanamo, why not just renovate Alcatraz, and use it for it was meant for; an inescapable prison?

OK, some will present that a few folks may have escaped from the place, but not many. And the unsinkable Titanic sunk. And some will present that the life at the Rock was cruel and unusual punishment. Whatever. Prison isn't meant to be fun, especially for enemies of our country who would kill us.

Alcatraz seems to me to be a waste of a usable prison compound left to decay, under the management of the National Park Service, when it could be reconstructed in existing buildings as a modern facility. It's all about good engineering and offers reasonable solution to the Guantanamo situation.

So, what am I missing? I'm sure y'all will tell me. Smile
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about? Smile

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

The purpose of establishing Camp Gitmo was to keep it off American territory, hence not subject to the ACLU.

Why would we want to keep Gitmo off American territory? I guess for all the blather, the US Constitution is not enough for some.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Gitmo is part of a U S Naval facility, hence considered sovereign US territory established by a perpetual lease in 1903. I sincerely doubt that Cuba would allow the construction of an American detainment camp on Cuban soil. Best check behind you, the ACLU is watching.

Because the people at Gitmo are not American citizens. Whatever protections they get, they get under the Geneva Convention. That's why guys like John Walker Lindh, even though he was an enemy combatant, aren't sent to Gitmo. The protections and benefits of the US constitution are for American citizens, not foreign combatants who are trying to kill our people.

It would be a whole cheaper if we dispensed with the ridiculous symbolism and keep them in a existing maximum security facility in this country.

Besides, Alcatraz is a tourist attraction.

I would rather keep them where they are so we can do bad things to them and have less chance of getting caught. Smile Of course that is just me.

I say they knew the possibility of getting caught and thought it was worth it. So they tossed the dice and lost. Now pay the price. if you can't do the time don't do the crime. Sayeth Baretta.

We don't need any more of this scum setting foot on the land of America the Beautiful.

You live in dream land.

Danny
You make me laugh there already is a very large state department of prisons maximum security facility in my town, and the people around here feel very safe having hundreds, or possibly thousands of prisoners living across the creek from us. Try another bogus theory Danny.

Build what? Al clearly referred to EXISTING maximum security facilities. There are many. They have room and they are far more secure that even Alcatraz was. Of the over one hundred terrorism defendants convicted in recent times in federal courts, none have ever escaped or presented an unusual security hazard.

So we house those who are known terrorists and associate with them in our country? Lets out them in that prison Al is so proud of. Why bring them here? What purpose does it serve?

I have lived here since 1975, and in that time only one trustee disappeared from a work party, and he was captured several hours later wearing his prison jump suit walking down the highway.

That will give you one less silly thing to complain about, and the value of that is absolutely immeasurable.

No Danny I would make all the terrorist's prison guards.
