What good uses do plastic cards have?
All I know is plastic cards are hard to do a double, fan, or even flip up into the air. |

Poker players use plastic cards because (a) they last about 500 times longer than Bikes, and (b) they are much harder to mark (you can't make nail prints in them, and they don't stay bent).
For magicians, I don't see any advantage in using plastic cards. They are thicker, so DLs aren't quite as natural; you can't crimp them or tear them; and they are fairly expensive, so you generally don't want to have spectators sign them. |

If you lick them and stick two cards together, they stay that way, even when you throw them in the air, bouncing off the wall and landing on the table.

They are good to use with some marketed effects like XPert. Can't say why without giving away the secret.

Yeah, they are good with Xpert. If anyone has seen the "Hit the Road" dvd, when they're in Vegas, they meet up with someone. I can't remember his name, but he puts on a great display of false shuffling and dealing with Kem cards. You know how hard those cards are to work with, Wow!

I've got some from China that are about half the thickness of Bikes. I've got thirty decks so I'm experimenting with various ideas at the moment. One possibility is doing something under water.

There's a clever idea for an any card at any number effect in Mind, Myth and Magic which uses the thin cards you are referring to, Jonesc2ii

I like to use plastic cards because they are wipe clean. They're especially good for when I get over excited with my Slop Shuffle.

KEM make two sizes what they call, Bridge size and Poker size but all casino's and poker players use their bridge size cards. The bridge size are normal size and poker size are wider. Don't ask me why KEM do this I don't know.
I find the KEM cards great and find doing a perfect shuffle easier with them and they always feel new even after hours of playing with them. Also most gamblers are aware that paper cards can be marked or crimped and are suspect of such that is why they use plastics. So to do a poker trick for poker players using paper cards will not impress as much as it would if plastics were used. I am entitled to my opinion and it is my opinion that there are snakes in the jungle.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

If you Buy X-Pert there is a killer effect using plastic cards. Normal ones are too porous for the effect.

You could do a card trick/escape where you are handcuffed and put upside down in the chinese water torture chamber of death. You can then escape the chamber and have the card in your mouth.

Well, if you are in a bar/restaurant sitution, and you can't avoid moisture, plastic cards are GREAT!
That being said, the only plastic cards I use are the new novelty ones that are clear/transparent. They LOOK cool, and that is all the justificantion I need, to be honest. Fanning and spreading them suck, but they are great for card springs. Also, since they are clear, they are great for effects where you change the card. I don't do much with them, to be honest, but when I use them, and people can see THROUGH the cards, it is just absolutely insane. Just my 3.8 cents. :-) Alan

Just in case anyone hasn't seen previous posts or has not heard of these transparent cards, they are called "Invisible Cards" and can be found at any Bed Bath and Beyond store, near the checkout counter, where they sell a bunch of other junk. Also look for business card cases and misers dream cans at bed bath and beyond stores. The invisible cards will run you about 6 or 7 bucks, but will last a long time and are very springy! (And cool to look at). Plus they come in a neat plastic case.
-Jordini P.S. I do NOT work for bed bath and beyond, but I HAVE found many great magic props there. |

I have a deck of KEMs that I've used for over 12 years. There's some color bleed where they were packed in a moist environment for a year while I was in Korea but they still spring great. I have to disagree with Niko. Any paper card, no matter the quality will wear out long before a KEM card.
My deck is (or at least seems to be) from a 1947 vintage. My oldest deck of Bikes is about 3 years old. HMM?!?

Well it depends on how much you use them doesn't it?

That said, plastic cards will be useless for magic straight out of the box. So if a deck of paper cards last me 4 hours, it'll have outlived the KEMs for MY purposes.
