This song proves you wrong. Just take a listen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHgxb5kQYGg This is real rap, how it's supposed to be performed. The rapper's name is Mike Shinoda aka Fort Minor. He originally started rapping with Linkin Park (a dubstep/rock band) but made his own solo album in 2005. He isn't like most rappers. Instead of punchlines, he focuses on stories. |

And yes, I think that a lot of rap (and modern music in general) is nasty, filthy, inappropriate, etc. But at it's core, rap is just like any other form of music: rhyming and rhythm. Sure, there's not any melody, but that's not the point. Still, I could take any rap lyrics, add instruments and melodies behind it, and nobody would ever know the difference. |

I agree, satellite23.
While rap and hip hop are not my favorite genres, there has, nonetheless, been quite a bit of good creative stuff that I've enjoyed very much. Back in the mid-fifties there were plenty who were saying the same negative things about early rock and roll. |

Setting off-putting lyrics aside, I just do not put rap in the category of music- perhaps because I find it annoying. To me, songs need to be sung. Also, I find the driving programmed beat, lacking in any change of tempo, anything but soothing. Looking back, I can remember feeling the same about "Hooked on classics", disco and a good bit of the Beatles stuff. But it is just me-nothing to disagree about... Regards, Jim

While I really dislike 'most' rap, I'll admit that the video gave me a new appreciation for what can be done with it. It was pretty cool that they could take a story like that and just be able to 'rap' it. Not that it made me like rap anymore! LOL
Usually the only time that I don't really mind rap is if it is added into an existing song for short periods of time. |

I don't like rap because it's mostly tone poetry and I don't care for tone poetry.
I acknowledge that rap, even negative rap, is difficult to do and requires quite a bit of talent. That doesn't mean I have to like it. I like Will Smith's stuff although I realize most of it is gimmicky stuff meant to promote his latest movie. I did like his "Summertime." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr0tTbTbmVA But even the positive stuff annoys me as they seem to be mostly forced rhymes. Right now, I'm listening to the Beatles, so I'm not clicking on your link. I'm sure it's very positive and that's to be admired when you see 90% of the rap out there is about street life and/or doing women. But I'm listening to the Beatles; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoVHC0s_sZs

Mike Shinoda is good. But... Tupac is King. RIP.

I'm a hip-hop and rap head from back in the day. I think it was quite ingenious for inner- city youth to take two turn tables and create a genre of music that turned into a world-wide phenomenon that generated billions of dollars.

If Tupac is King, Jay-Z must be the Prince.
I forgot how much Jay-Z is involved with Mike Shinoda, but I just got a CD last night-----"Linkin Park: Collision Course ft. Jay-Z" It's sick, a bunch of remixes of LPs old songs, with some guest appearances by Jay himself. And, Jay produced Fort Minor's record, "Rising Tied." |

Here's another gem from Mike Shinoda. It's called "Hands Held High." There are two F-bombs in the first verse, but his point it well put. I hope you like it...I know I sure do!
