I recently saw a post arguing the merits of selling instructional material after performances. Some argued that it should be done and that it was part of a great marketing strategy, and others argued against it, saying that it was a mistake and could be misleading.
I have my own marketing system that I have used for quite some time that I was tempted to share, but the thread became somewhat contentious, so I moved on without posting. I also was not sure about sharing too much as I use this system constantly and wanted to keep it somewhat exclusive. I've spent some time thinking it over, however, and decided that I could share this approach without making it too broadly known. I've seen other creators release their ideas as “limited releases” and I didn't want to do that. I've decided instead to introduce an idea I call “Brigadooning”. Inspired by the fictional Scottish village of Brigadoon, which appeared for one day every hundred years and then subsequently disappeared, I've decided to do that with a few of my products. Occasionally and often without fanfare, I will make one of my creations available on my website for a day or so and then remove it. While many ideas are suitable for wider release, the reasons I'd like to adopt this approach to selling some of my ideas that I don't want to release more broadly is that: 1. I can ensure relative exclusivity by offering something for a day or two every year or so; and 2. If I want to share my ideas with others for free (which I occasionally do – especially with younger performers who are seeking a mentor), I am not contractually obligated to keep to a limited number of copies. It just made sense to me that some ideas are best disbursed in this fashion and can be therefore shared without saturating the market or limiting the creator's freedom to share his work with others. I will therefore be “Brigadooning” one of my approaches to marketing my services, beginning today. I know that each of us has been approached after a performance and asked “How did you do that!?” Wouldn't it be great if, by answering that question, you could: -Give out your business card in a way that would ensure it was kept and valued -Provide misdirection that bolsters your character and can make future performances easier -Drive traffic to your website -Give you a good chance at receiving a future booking from that person -Get that person excited about mentalism by teaching them how to perform something impressive on their own My system does all this and does not reveal any traditional methodology. Whenever I am asked “How did you do it?”, I can hand my inquisitor my business card and walk away confident that they will value it, keep it, and be satisfied that they both had their question answered and will never forget me. This approach is suited only to those who present as “Psychological” mentalists, and purchase of this system gives you a license to distribute a document through your website that gives a broad answer to your inquisitor's questions whilst solidifying their belief in the premise that you demonstrated through your performance. The system is priced at $20 and the “Brigadoon” will end soon. As I say, I use this system and would like to share it, but not universally and not indefinitely. This is available Here. Best, Atlas |

Is this mainly/only for mentalism?
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Marketing for psychological mentalists? That's TOTALLY up my alley.
Took the plunge. Will post reviews after I read it. Nigel |

Just took a read. I liked the premise of "teaching" your spectators/clients a psychological effect, which I believe will really help add a depth of realism in your mentalism work in the eyes of your clients and spectators, and can thus help sell your performing services. I would recommend for "psychological mentalists" to give this a look.
But of course, like Atlas himself mentioned, this marketing technique will only work for psychological mentalists, since the effect taught is very psychological in nature. Nigel |

Xaerius, thanks for sharing your feedback. I'm glad you like the approach - I knew a lot of people would, which is why I've shared it. It is a great way to market yourself.
The "Brigadoon" ends this evening. Best, Atlas |
