Hi Guys,
Havent been around for awhile but I'm back to work on my on again/off again illusion hobby. I have a question for you stage workers. I have a Doll Ashra routine that I really like and gets great responses, but I'm not wild about my equipment. The bench is good, but the form is pretty ugly and somewhat heavy (its based on a plastic doll body). A few questions for thsoe who know either. the doll or stage versions... My doll Ashra currently uses a Zombie technique for levitation. Id love to make it light enough to do a dual technique, and start with a hook up and maybe transition to Zombie. Due to the weight of the form though all my hookup experiments to date have failed. (1) My set was the only one I could find for sale at the time but strikes me as somewhat "knock off" quality. Are there better sets with better forms? (2) Im thinking about making my own form, but I am not sure where to begin. Would stage plans for the form be able to be scaled down? Ive heard building a form can be tricky, if I spent enough time in trial and error could someone wth no welding experience make a decent one? (Keep in mind this would be scaled down and thus of lighter grade materials.) Finally, if so, what is the best reference currently available for its construction? Thanks CQ

Hello, my friend! Welcome back! Missed ya! I'm thinking brass wire and a brazing torch. I've worked with brass before and it's pretty easy. Go to Radio Shack and get one of those portable torches. Get some silver solder and the appropriate brass wire.
That's one idea... Doug |

Hey Doug!
Thanks, I think that sounds about right, but I do still need to get some plans. I have a general idea of what the form should be and do but I have a feeling that there are subtleties to it, such as how to get it to fold or hide when not in use, that others have already figured out. Do you (or any one else) have any suggestion for stage size plans I could scale down?

The Stage Asrah? Hmmm. I might. I'll have to dig...I gotta LOT of material here. I've seen an original form. It IS pretty elaborate, but if you're scaling it down...ya might simplify it a bit.
Use the doll as a template. You don't have to be perfect, as the thing is covered anyway. The B.A. principle is used here. Not sure about the folding part. Timing on the stage version is critical. As the cloth is drawn away, a very quick "in the flies" happens. Not sure how all this would translate into 1/6th scale. |

Ah, that makes sense, thanks.
That never occurred to me, I always assumed the form stayed with the cloth, something like the European form. In magic, assumptions are deadly We probably shouldn't get more specific "in public" I think Ill start with the way the current form works where it just hides, but lighten it up. Once Ive gotten that to work, I can try to think of more clever mechanisms Thanks much!
