Hope this is the correct forum. I am making my way as a beginner through Royal Road, but I am having a problem with Top Palm. I really want to understand how to do it, but I just can't get it. I have the LL accompanying video (Paul Wilson) but I am still having no luck levering naturally. Does anyone have a suggestion on where I can learn how to do this sleight. THanks. If this is the wrong forum, just point me to the correct one and I apologize in advance.

Hello! I find the method taught in Harry Lorayne's "The Magic Book" a little more workable than the one from Royal Road. Also, a lot of card men prefer a one-hand top palm for a single card. There are plenty of books and videos to learn that from (including Daryl's "Encyclopedia of Card Sleights"), and it really isn't all that difficult. As an alternative that might be less expensive, there are some good methods in Expert at the Card Table, which you can still track down in the public domain. They all require practice, but with persistence, you will find one that works for you. For multiple cards, Michael Ammar has a great, easy method he teaches as part of his version of "Las Vegas Leaper" on Easy to Master Card Miracles vol. 1. Of course, you can also learn a lot of palming in Roberto Giobbi's books. Keep at it. Palming is very useful in card magic.

Maybe if we knew what troubles you.
Film yourself doing it, and let us help you. Not just the card in position, but the complete move, from the steal to the holding of the card. Show us your palm with the card, from below, from the side. In short: let us see what's wrong... P! |

I learned the top-palm I use most often from Tarr's "Now You See It, Now You Don't" (A book I highly recommend for beginners.)
I hope describing such a basic move in public won't offend anyone... if so, sorry, my bad... Basically you lay the deck in your off hand (left in my case) and cover it with your other hand (right in my case) in an apparent squaring motion. You use the fingertips of the off hand to push the center of the top card up into the palm of the covering one. Tarr has great illustrations in his book that explain it more clearly then I can in text. As in any move, the trick is practice, practice, practice.
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.

I'm at the same spot and having trouble with the Palm, but mine is with the alignment of the hands so that the card pops to where it should be - right now, it is leaking over on one side or the other. Am I supposed to seriously cant my left wrist ccw (to the left) to get the deck in a better position, or should I be changing my left-hand grip on the pack (so I'm holding it at a different angle, but my wrist is straight) so that my right hand can just come over and be in alignment?
