On a YouTube video from one of his kid shows, Tommy James performs a T&R newspaper listed as the "Slow Motion Paper Tear." The only T&R newspaper I've ever done (since 1974, I think) is the Gene Anderson version. Can anyone tell me what version it is that Tommy does on the video, and where I can find it or the instructions? This one seems much simpler in set-up, and I'd like to try it.
Thanks! TED |

Ya Tommy is a great guy. I bought numerous products from him and he called me to tell me that he was a bit late on shipping them but the products were going out. He's a good guy!

Ted: I agree. PM him. He is here on the Café and very accessible.
By the way, Gene's version is the CLASSIC version. Yes, it takes a bit of work to put together, but there really is none better. Gene is a friend of mine, and a member of the IBM Ring I occasionally visit. He is also equally accessible if you ever have any questions or concerns about his stuff.

OK, everyone...
Tommy responded quickly to my inquiry. His "Slow Motion Newspaper Tear" (see the video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fB_1yrohKs) is none other than that of Ron Wilson, and can be found in the book, "The Uncanny Scot" (which, unfortunately, is now out of print). According to Tommy (and for those of you who may not be familiar with Ron Wilson's method), this version "takes 20 seconds to re-set." He very highly recommends it! You can watch Ron Wilson's 1988 performance of his "The Uncanny Newspaper" here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7I2bJZITV4 TED |

If the book is now out of print, does anyone know of another source to learn this tear?

Quote: Available on Amazon from $125 to $275. I've been using the Anderson Tear for decades, but with the changing sizes of newspapers (and eventual demise of newspapers altogether), I'd love to have the Uncanny Newspaper as a backup. Plus, there are dozens of FREE newspapers that are the same size as the one used in the video. If anyone finds a source for this one... P-L-E-A-S-E share. On 2013-05-30 13:24, TedLashley wrote: |

It is indeed Ron's version of the Elmsley tear, which is based on the Slydini Tear . I've got a DVD that shows my handling of the set up and presentation just becoming available. I do not do the final separation of the pages though, as I wanted to use a full size paper. Alex originally designed it so that the tearing could be done in a sloppy fashion but I've closed my show with it for years too as a Slow Motion Tear, because it is so *** convincing! The trick just doesn't gain much in my opinion by the speed of the Anderson Tear as the audience doesn't get to fully appreciate the effect. It is way stronger to let them see the gradual restoration of the paper......

I used to use the one that Joel Bauer used on a video he put out. It works on all the free tabloid sized papers.

You can find Alex Elmsley performing his newspaper tear and explaining it on the World's Greatest Magic DVD- Torn and Restored Newspaper - from L&L Publishing.
