Why is the zombie wire not bent for the thing?

Luna Shimada bends it for the floating bubble.

I can only suggest you pose that question to the creator. Bill Abbott is a very nice magician and has answered all my emails.

I've thought about doing this myself if I ever get/make a thing. The straight gimmick certainly telegraphs the method.

I can pose an answer.
I had access to one once and I played with it a lot.
Normally, I see props like this and see it as a tool for further advancement.
This routine was different.
First to offer an answer to the question.
In normal Zombie, bending the gimmick aids in deepeing it hidden.
If it pops up at the wrong time, only a bit by the floating object may show.
If not curved, almost the entire thing will pop into view.
The gim for the thing is covered. That is the nature of the Thing System.
So there is no need to curve it.
Here is a bit about what I thought the possibilites of further development with this routine are.
There are virtually none.
Bill Abbott has done his homework.
I think he has wrenched almost all that can be done with this concept.
The mechanical problems associated with the Thing present many challenges in the final structure of, not only the prop, but of any possible rouitne for it. Bill appears to have addressed the issues and has produced a routine to capitalize on the mechanics of the device.
So, there is an answer to the question and a complement to the creator.

I think the move where he surprises himself when he captures "the thing" is brilliant and certainly uses the concept to its fullest. Thank you, Mr. Schneider, for your zombie book!

Yes! Al, that happened to me ON STAGE at Bates College Auditorium in Maine! My gosh...the audible gasps when that gimmick revealed itself! My blood ran COLD! I will never forget that icy feeling!

That was the late 70's. I have not performed on stage since...

The advantage of the curved #$#4#&76 gimmick is that you can blow, not move your hands, and the cloth rises

That is not the purpose of the curve, as you mentioned above, the floating item has to be on a swivel to work like that. See Tommy Wonder video for the working and explanation.

The purpose of the curve is for the draping of the cloth, that is all.
