Jason,
Perhaps you could get in touch with Mickey. He is in Boston and will be meeting with Jon Townsand. I am sure he would be willing to review any of the material you have to confirm his orginality or give credit where credit is due. I am not clear if you have seen Mickey's retention yet or not. If you haven't then that explains your comments. If you have, then I would like to see your sources as well, as I have never seen anyone perform a retention as well as this. With all due repect to the great coin men of LVMI and Coinvention, I believe this is true. Why should Mickey publish? Perhaps because the sources you have been exposed to are no longer available. Why should Michael Ammar publish the cups and balls? It is not like he invented them. This will advance the art of magic. Even if you don't adopt his technique, his thinking is something that can be applied to other effects. Kirk Grodske By the way, Mickey is no spring chicken(no offense Mickey) so it is very likely that he was doing this way earlier than the nineties. Kirk |

Ammar should never have published the Cups book but that is another story.
I have yet to see Mickey's handling. Not sure that it matters all that much that I haven't. I can tell you that those I have seen do a great pass have no finger flash. But that is really neither here nor there. The originality aspect was already addressed by Jon in another thread. I don't know who the first to do it was, but anyone who plays with an idea long enough will stumble onto similiar ideas of others. So it seems obvious to me that Mickey while adept at the move he probably isn't the originator (if he is, then my apologies to him). I just find it infinately funny that we as a group are concerned with "no finger flash". Concerning Armando Lucero's Matrix presentation- I understand that Lucero has a motivation and construction for the routine that has been previously unsurpassed. Are his techniques ground breaking? Possibly though I would lean towards the idea that Armando has studied this effect and devised a way for the moments to happen with a reason and purpose, unlike most routines that border on becoming mind-numbingly banal. I truly applaud new technique and wait with anticipation that perhaps I am wrong about all my musings here. After all this though there is no humanly way for Mikey to live up to the hype because, as I have said before, this is just a retention pass. Mind numbing in my own way Jason |

Jason just one last thing, as stated there were many yp magicians at the LV convention
including Dave Neighbors, David Roth Curtis Kam .Micheal Close,Jeff McBride ,artin Nash,Kirk G.,Paul Harris,Allan Ackerman,Many more to numerious to name .All of them had the highest praise for mickeys work.. So I guess you'll just have to see him perform to belive what we say is true. ps How come Tim Trono and Bob Kohler are beggng him to put this on a dvd .I hope mickey gets in touch with PaulChosse and he sends him a video |

Jason,
I think you have seized on a very small component of Mickey's retention vanish. While his finger motion ranges from invisable to slight, that is not the crux of his move. It just really looks like it is in the hand. In fact, even when it is not, he can show you that it is. When it goes into his mouth, you'd swear he is putting up with gastrointestinal stress just to mess with your mind. Judging from your comments, I feel we have many similar ideas and backgrounds. I would love to get together and session. If you get out to the Los Angeles area, let me know and I will meet you at the Castle. I don't expect to get to the Florida area any time soon. Best. I just watched my copy of the video that Mickey very kindly sent me. WOW. It has been a long time since I have had a big smile on my face throughout an entire routine. His magic in stunning and visual. I love his take on the retention with the "proof" that the coin is inside his hand. I also loved the move where the coin is being put into the left hand. Its a small stylistic move, but WOW it looks great. Also, the coin in mouth retention looks amazing. I can't wait for Mickey to put out a dvd with his touches on everything. MICKEY.... thanks for sharing this with me. I have been raving about it all day.

This has really caught my interest lately. My retention vanish isn't the greatest in the world and I would love to have a video with more in depth info about it, and this seems like the way to go. Anyone have an idea when a DVD might pop out? I would love to see Mickey's work

Mickey replied to me privately, All is Good.
I am hoping to attend LVMI but as a performing magician the task of getting away is daunting. I promised myself I would attend the next one and am looking forward to meeting many of the Café members. Jason |

I have just been priviledged to see Mickey's Video. It is by the far the most different one ever. (1)Mickey himself is so opoenly gregarious, affable, friendly, He talks to YOU non- stop as he performs. (2) he has his own continual- motion personalized body languagethat is arresting. (3) I'm not sure what I saw or did not see. He places a coin in his left hand and it just vanishes, really vanishes, but does it? It really is still there, but--it isn't. Huh?? A coin VISIBLY is placed into his right ear and travels to his left ear--again VISIBLY, and back again. Coin after coin is placed in his mouth, really placed there, chewed, swallowed! Sometimes it is spit back into his left hand.
Mickey says he is not teaching the retention vanish itself but rather, the RETENTION of VISION itself. I'm not sure I fully know what he means but I do know I was totally and absolutely bedaxxled and by the nicest guy in town. Marty K Penna |

From what I understand, if anyone is looking for a tape of Mickey's retention work, just personally mail him that you're interested in viewing his tape. Even if he doesn't know you. He seems to be one heck of a nice guy and will always accomodate anyone who is interested in the art of magic. Hey, it worked for me!

Oh Marty, you had to go and tell everyone what a nice guy Mickey is and how on the tape he sends he talks to you...
Guess the secret is out now. Mickey better get into the studio with a checklist of items for his video. LOTS of folks are gonna be sending him messages asking for a tape.

I just viewed the video demo Mickey sent me, and I must agree with everyone here, it's incredible!! This is by far the best retention vanish I have ever seen, and if he would release a dvd explaining this move out, I would definently purchase it. Even KNOWING it was a sleight of hand, my mind had the image of the coin in his empty hand burned in the whole way through. Not once did he do it and I was not certain it was still sitting in that hand. Now granted this is a very old move, but I've never seen it done to the point that I was sure it was in the empty hand even though I knew it wasn't. Now I'm just left impatient waiting for an instructional vid on this. If Mickey can make a video about this one sleight as nice as the Sylvester Pitch video, his got a real winner here
