The Detroit Tigers are a magnificent baseball team. Talent loaded, some of the best run producers ever. Unfortunately, their manager lives in the stone age and their "closer" is not much more capable of anything other than supplying batting practice. Frustrating the crap out of me, I have been a Tiger fan since grade school.
The Tigers are a beautiful, fast and powerful Lexis, but Leyland and Poopa Grande are the dead fish in the trunk which ruins the entire car. The starters (the best in the majors) have to give Leyland at least a 3 run lead going into the 9th to make it "Leyland proof"- and even that lead is not safe. Verlander got another ridiculous non-decision today (gave up only 3 hits). Tigers will get into the postseason due to their fantastic talent, but then will eventually lose in the post season with thier ridiculous stubborn non-coaching and continued blind use of non-closers. Dave Dombrowski: FIRE LEYLAND, release Valverde!, and make this season now one to remember! |

Yep, I agree with the #1 sports commentator Bill "Huge" Simonson in Michigan- Leyland holds this great team back by his old school formula non-managing. Huge is crazy too? I don't think so. He is right. Huge is one of the few guys who said Leyland should have been fired after the sweep in the World Series- the Tigers position by position were better than the Giants by far (and still are).
The Tigers win in spite of their manager, almost no run lead now is "Leyland proof." Leyland can have a red hot relief pitcher in the 8th, but he'll pull him in the 9th for Poopa Grande. A Little League coach could take this talent loaded team to a very weak Central Division Championship. Leyland cannot even call for a simple pitchout when the game is on the line with Poopa pitching when everyone on the planet knows the tie runner on first in the 9th needs to get to second. Leyland adds absolutely nothing to this great team, Dombrowski gets all the talent, then the starting pitchers and great hitters have to do their part so Leyland won't later screw it up. Leyland has no feel for the flow of the game-read The Detroit News or The Detroit Free Press- he just manages by his outdated "righty/lefty" setup/closer methods and sticking with a few players who, for whatever reason, have lost it. He cannot even manage the few positions he does have control over, like who comes in to pitch in the ninth, or the players at the end batting order, etc. Obviously, no coach is going to pull the hottest hitters in baseball earlier in the lineup. When Poopa blows his next "save" opportunity against the Twinkies (like giving up a homer with two outs, two strikes vs KC)- then maybe Dombrowski will get him released before Leyland loses another series with the Tiger leads going into the 8th and 9th. Will Leyland put in Poopa Grande tonight against the Twins- of course he will- he is Leyland and yet another save will get blown. Hear those Tigers fans booing?- they are all nuts too? Anytime there is any kind of "managing" involved to win a game in Detroit, we can count on Leyland to react too slowly, or even rest key players later in the season when they are needed (e.g. two years ago), or pull hot pitchers out too early. Tony La Russa managing this same amazing Tigers team would have had a double digit division lead by now. How many Verlander and Scherzer wins need to be non-decisioned out before the front office gets the message? The managers of the other AL teams with half the talent the Tigers just have to be loving it- just ask Kansas City. I love the Tigers- have been at many of their games personally for the last 35 years. Best team I have ever seen, worst manager I can remember. If Billy Martin could have had even some of this talent... It's about the players- and Detroit is loaded. When Detroit starts losing them in a few years to free agency- then it will be too late to try to replay the mismanaged series that Leyland will continue to lose this year. The opposing managers no doubt know he is as predictable as the Fox Sports crew failing to ever say a negative word about Leyland or Poopa Grande. When the Tigers win, it is not with the help of their manager, it is in spite of their manager they win anyway, they are that good. |

Tiger fans, all I can say is as a Pirate fan who had to endure Leyland, I feel your pain. We had 3 shots in the early 90s at the pennant and Leyland made some boneheaded decisions and some non-decisions. I can't remember the pitcher's name, but he used to pitch for Cincinnati. We were playing the Reds in the 1990 playoffs. The Pirates had acquired this pitcher from the Reds - and this guy was at best a mop up guy. Anyhow, Leyland decided to START this guy because in his reasoning, this pitcher knew the Reds lineup so well. Casey Stengel and John McGraw are spinning in their graves as is Danny Murtaugh, Fred Clarke, and Bill Virdon.
My Buccos are doing alright but for us, we are doing well because of our manager and guys like McCutcheon, McHenry, and even though the Giants whooped our butts last night, Liriano is still a force to contend with; our GM however sucks and our owner in my estimation is almost as bad as Walter O'Malley. I do love the Tigers. I became a fan when I lived in Toledo. They are my favorite American League team and I HOPE that soon, the Pirates and Tigers will meet in a World Series rematch. We last met in the WS in 1909 and we need to kick your butts again. Keep the faith Tiger fans, you have a hell of a team!! |

As predicted, Jimbo put in Poopa again last night in the 9th- but Tigers had a 4-0 lead already built up so that win was "Leyland proof". Poopa immediately walks the first batter (is that what a closer should do when the team has a large lead going into the 9th?- of course not, but no worries- Leyland would never pull him), then Poopa hits a batter later in the 9th (and of course does not get pulled after that miscue either).
Oh well, Poopa Grande lucked out with a Twinkies double play so the Tigers still won. The win will probably be attributed to brilliant Tiger managing. Dave Dombrowski will come through, he will find a closer for Detroit sooner rather than later, and that new relief pitcher will not need any help from non-existing bench strategy(like young Ron-done from Toledo would). Then look out, the 2013 Tigers will most likely still be playing again in late October. |
