I recently purchased a WL shell from Mark Mason but its a bit too much larger.
I have some Johnson Kennedy shells and the size of the shell and coins is almost exactly same. But with WL shell of Mark Mason, the shell clearly looks larger then normal coins. Is it normal? |

My Schoolcraft looks a bit larger as well. I don't think your spectators are looking that close. . .

Expanded shells, especially for older coins, do have a slight tendency to be larger - or rather the coins inside the shell have some considerable wear making them seem smaller. a simple fix, if all your insert coins are a bit smaller is to run some mouse tape inside the rim and trim it down from hanging out with an exacto knife. this not only will solve the oversize problem but will reduce talking a bit.

I would suggest optically clear teflon tape... it has solved a myriad of problems with certain coin gaffs... http://www.amazon.com/CS-Hyde-Optically-......00REI90W [/quote] I agree that would also work but I prefer it on parts that will be seen by the spec and use my scraps of mouse tape to fill in the parts that shouldn't generally be seen by the spec . both will work though

The problem is that the shell appears big when the normal coins and shell are placed side by side. The fit is perfect. How to handle this?

But is the Johnson WL Shell or a WL shell from any other vendor has the same issue? Assuming that the WL halfs are UNC.

Don't lay them exactly side by side if that is the issue. Just a little space will throw off any discrepancy a spec may have . I once had a set of Chinese coins that was 1 coin and 3 progressively larger shells. spacing while setting them on the mat made all the difference. guess I misunderstood your original issue but this should solve it.
And, no matter who the maker, if you are using an expanded shell it will be larger by its very nature of being expanded to fit any coin. If you get a non expanded shell with a set of ground down and re milled coins - still the same issue - it will be larger than the coins it was meant to cover, but the same if you set it by regular coins although you wont be able to cover them with the non expanded shell

An expanded shell will always be larger than the coins they are made to fit over. The more generic the intended covered coin the larger the shell. A set which includes the coins that it will fit on and therefore more closely fit the shell, will more closely appear to be the same size as the matching set of coins because the maker can keep closer tolerance. Such things as the thickness of the sells sides will also affect the size of the shell. There really are differences between the various gaff makers products.

It's definitely a trade off. Walls too thin and the gaff is fragile, too thick and there is a noticeable difference in size. That's why I prefer matching re-milled sets (Dean's set). The least difference in size between the shell and the insert coin and the most usability (you don't have to keep too close of a watch on which coin fits the shell).

How coin gaffers expand their [ differs from one to another. Some are better than others. I buy only TL expanded [ with fitted and matched coins and it makes a huge difference when I display all coins close to each other. Sometimes the distortion on the expanded [ makes you think it looks bigger but in fact it is just a quality of the expanded [ ... just my two cents.

Some tips.
When stacking a group of coins that have an expanded shell over one of the coins, stack the pile a bit staggered... try not to line them up on top of each other too evenly. And as stated above, when they are laid out on a table/close up pad... don't put them too close together. |

All good advice. Shakuni, most spectators will NOT notice!
