Ultimately, it isn't the word or phrase itself that offends; it's the idea that it conveys. But rather than deal with the idea itself, people decide that all they have to do is replace the offensive word with an inoffensive euphemism, and that'll be the end of it. I think this misses the problem altogether. It is a person's use of language in a context that is the problem. Quote:
Until people realize that it isn't the word that's the problem, the problem will persist. Again, I think that this is not the point at all. Until people stop speaking in needlessly hurtful and harmful ways, the problem will persist. Recognizing that it is use not mention that is the issue doesn't make hurt and offense stop. John

1) Words themselves can be offensive (see my unsubtle /sarcasm above).
2) Whatever Bill Maher says or doesn't say, he's still generally a d-bag. 3) I meant to be offensive in 2) and take full responsibility for my words.

And those people would be a problem no matter which words they used.

I don't think people should be calling her names. Especially, if she really lost a leg.

I am offended by 1/3 of the words used in this Thread.
Yeah, I used those words too, but I have linguistic friends.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Say... didn't there used to be a recipe thread or two around here?
I think it's great that straight middle class white males aren't offended by the use of the N-Word, by the way. Way to go out on a limb with that one.

Paula on The Today show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suvJoI5y7Hk The oddest thing thing she said? She thinks that the NBC Today Show is a "wonderful, happy place". I guess she hasn't talked to Ann Curry;-) How could she have millions of dollars, with a mind like that? The entire interview is just strange. She's her own worst enemy. She lives in a bubble with everyone kissing her behind, so she has no idea that the things she says sound so stupid. Let anyone that has NEVER said something they regretted it, take a stone or boulder and hit her in the head so hard that it kills her? CUCKOO!!!!!!!! And she adopted Hillary's "vast right wing conspiracy" line of thinking: "There's someone evil out there that saw what I worked for and wanted it". If she believes that, she is a real loon. "I is what I is and I'm not chang'in"....Paul Deen *Except for the loss of millions of dollars. |

I enjoy the hypocrisy of those so offended by words being so quick to call names and hurt with words.

Ya know, I really tire of hypocrisy. I've had black friends all my life. One guy was my best friend. And ya know what I learned? If the "N" word ends with "-ga" instead of "-ger" it's OK. WHaaaat? Oh, and only BLACK people can say it (and they DO!). A white guy says it...ya got problems.
I was the only white guy in the group once. That word was used every other word. Oh, but "whitey" was used freely, and I thought nothing of it. Today, looking back, I find it's ridiculous! OMG he used the "N" word! Ohhh! The world's gonna end! Lemme tell ya something I find disturbing. Up here in Augusta Maine there are only white people. No Asians, one or two blacks, no hispanics, no Greeks, no Italians. No ethicity at all! Just whites and Canadian French. They can't make jokes about blacks or hispanics or Asians. Nobody would get it. So, they pick on the French! And boy DO they! One time I was in the Food (Soup) Kitchen downtown. A black guy came in, and I pulled a chair out for him to sit at my table. Some guy comes up and runs him out! "We don't serve COONS here!" Whaaat? I haven't heard that term since...gosh. Since I was a kid! That's how backwards it is here. They still use archaic terms in this day and age! I was in Hannaford Supermarket one day. I mentioned to a staff that I wish there was an Asian Market here. "Oh", he says..."We run them G**ks outta town YEARS ago!" Apparently so. There are NO Asians up here. Well, one or two. There is a Thai Restaurant up by the airport. Only out-of-towners eat there! Want a pure WHITE BREAD lifestyle? Come to Augusta Maine! If it got any whiter, it would blind me! I have to go to Boston a few times a year to get away from it... Doug |
