Seriously you are trying to explain this to the lawyer? Heck your experience with American law itself is limited to the internet as you are Canadian.
Gotta love this place. GDW never ceases to amaze and amuse.

Danny, we seem to have merely been arguing semantics.

As a lawyer, I can say with great confidence that most of us don't know anything.

Pretty outrageous, but to say he's getting less attention when the story was on NPR and CNN is a little hard to fathom...

If one wants to understand how the world really works then one only needs one book which is The Godfather. The international bankers are the godfather:
The Godfather (1972) Sollozzo: Bene, Don Corleone. I need a man who has powerful friends. I need a million dollars in cash. I need, Don Corleone, all of those politicians that you carry around in your pocket, like so many nickels and dimes. Don Corleone: What is the interest for my family? Sollozzo: Thirty percent. In the first year your end should be three, four million dollars. And then it would go up. Don Corleone: And what is the interest for the Tattalgia family? Sollozzo: [smiles at Tom] My compliments. [Hagen gives a formal nod] Sollozzo: I'll take care of the Tattaglias, out of my share. Don Corleone: So, I am to receive thirty percent for finance, for legal protection and political influence. Is that what you're telling me? Sollozzo: That's right. One can not expect the godfather bankers and those under their protection to be busted, by and large, but those not under their protection of course are fair game, meat on the table. Simple as that. When is enough enough? Lets say now you have had enough. So what are you going to do? Nothing! That is because, whether you like it or not, you can't. All you can do is write on the walls and get yourself arrested.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

So, the guy in the OP was charged and acquitted within a week. And such outrage this brought. Terrible injustice.
Yet the teen who spent months in jail, was only released on bail because an anonymous donor put up the $500,000!!!! dollar bond, is still waiting for a court date to face a possible sentence of 1 to 8 years. And this waiting in limbo has been going on since February 14! All for making an insensitive joke while playing a video game online. http://www.keyetv.com/news/features/top-......98.shtml |

I don't know that is the case for a fact, but I would not be surprised if the cuts did not play some role. Anyway, here is an interview (with video clip) with Justin Carter: http://www.businessinsider.com/justin-ca......w-2013-7 Here is another Texas teen who was in a similar situation: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/352......-w-cooke Apparently the second teen pleaded guilty to one charge according to his lawyer's advice. Not sure what happened since.

Still no resolution for Justin Carter. The dorky kid who, while playing league of legends made the stupid joke that got him in trouble with the law. The sort of stupid things that lots of kids probably say while playing video games. "Carter's comments were part of a duel between dorks and may have had something to do with a game with strong dork appeal called League of Legends. But the actual details and context of the online exchange are, in the eyes of Texas authorities, unimportant. Prosecutors say they don't have the entire thread — instead, they have three comments on a cell-phone screenshot." Those stupid comments put him in jail for about 8 months where he was attacked and sexually assaulted and given a $500,000 bond. He'd probably still be in jail, waiting trial, if an anonymous donor hadn't put the money up for his bond. Sorry if I don't feel a lot of outrage for a guy charged with illegal bank activity whose charges were quickly dropped. |

I don't see why one precludes the other. They are both miscarriages of justice.
