Here's a topic. Do you asks kids sometime after the show "what was your favorite trick?" If so, how often? Is it accurate or are they just mentioning the ones toward the end because it's fresher in their memory? What do you do with that info, and should you care?

I ask often. And I've learned a ton from the answers. Instead of their favorite trick, I ask what their favorite PART of the show was. The answers have often been items near the beginning of the show. My biggest lesson I've gained from asking is how much "magic" kids find in moments that I don't consider magic. I've pretended to pull a sponge banana out of my ear. In my mind it was just a silly sight gag, but a child once told me his favorite part of the show was when I pulled that banana out of my ear. Over the years because of similar responses I've put myself in their shoes more and started thinking about magic in a child's eyes as opposed to my own ideas of magic and tricks.

When I do shows for preschools, kindergarten classes, or 1st grade classes, the teacher often asks the kids what they liked best and up shoot the hands! As each one is called upon, they INVARIABLY begin with the same words: "I liked the part ....." music to my ears. And yes, the bits of business are usually chosen over the actual effects. The comedy chair is a frequent winner.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Good comments from Christopher and The Mighty Fool. Whenever Leslie and I develop a new themed show for preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade kids, we ask them what they liked best immediately after the performance. Teachers are usually eager to help, and the children's comments can be both illuminating and gratifying ... (and sometimes, revealing!)

Most kids and adults tell me that they liked the way I stretched the ropes. Once I did PN for a 22 year old man who told me that he remembers me doing the same trick for him at the YMCA when he was 7 years old. Once a young mom stopped me in the super market and told me that she remembers me at her 8th birthday party. They mostly remember me because my magic isn't unforgettable.

I asked many times to see what response the kids would give me. My method of Misers Dream was the favorite for a while. After I added Dove From Frame, that gets the #1 votes. At times adults walk up to me and mention they like Dove From Frame the most. I do not even ask them.

I ALWAYS ask what the kids liked about the show. That way I can tell the host(ess).... right while they are getting the payment together.
I know the most popular answers, by now, but occasionally one of them mentions an aspect that is unique. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Where is a better (different) question. What trick DIDN"T you like? You never know what they'll say.
