Insane, but funny! I'd write a letter stating that as a magician, I only make my rabbit appear during non-threatening situations. The rest of the time he stays "disappeared", and as such, safe from disaster.
Someone at the USDA must be really looking for some way to justify his paycheck. What an idiot.

Not surprised in the slightest. Why is anyone?

I doubt that this is true at all.
The U.S.D.A would be concerned if it was a tiger or other such animal a rabbit? Doubtful. Of course I don't believe many reports like this. |

Hello All:
Yes RS1963 I would be skeptical too--this sounds so unbelievable. But it is true. I have just scanned the letter and emailed it to Bob McCarty just to verify everything. This whole disaster plan idea sounded good--it was for zoos with hundreds of animals. But then they decided anyone who has a USDA license must follow this rule. My 8 page letter just came the other day, and they are VERY serious about this. Not only do I have to have the plan in WRITING, but I must carry it with me, and if I am inspected while playing a road date (say at a fair, etc) I must not only produce my rabbit license, but now this written disaster plan. Still don't believe me--look it up here: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare......an.shtml |

Not in the least bit surprised by them doing this; still surprised at people's willingness to continue to support and believe in such a system.

This would say otherwise. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Do+you+need+a+licen......abbit%3F and this. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=License+to+perform+with+rabbits Nowhere does it seem to indicate that any of this is true.
Which leads me to believe that this is a made up story for publicity. The search doesn't show that such a license is needed. If you are a breeder of rabbits that is s different story due to the fact that you will more than likely be selling them etc... |

There seems to be some confusion about this, even going back as far as 2005:

Hello RS1963. I don't know what to tell you, other than this is the truth and you need to do your research. I am a class B exhibitor under the law since I use a rabbit in my magic show. Any magician using a rabbit in his show must have a license. I have a USDA inspector come to my home each year to inspect my rabbit. I pay a fee of $40 dollars and also take my rabbit to the vet each year. I have done this for 5 years--an inspector saw a picture of me holding a rabbit, came to my library show and busted me. Now, they have added a new law, requiring a disaster plan. I just mentioned this on facebook, and didn't realize how it would go crazy--even made Fox news this morning.
For background on this rule, and stories of myself and other magicians who were busted, read this story that magician Tim Sonefelt wrote for Kidabra: http://bobmccarty.com/2011/05/25/usda-ra......gicians/ I know you might be skeptical RS1963, but don't call me a liar, and don't speak on subjects you really don't know about. I am living this every day. I am the Kid Show Columnist for the Linking Ring Magazine, am a magic dealer, have performed at just about every magic convention in the US and have been a full time performer for 27 years. So I think my reputation speaks for itself. |

From my experience, both Marty and his beautify wife Brenda are to classy to deceive with the intent of national publicity, to further their careers. Next time you are in Branson, look him up and you will see what we mean by classy honest magicians.

Pure Monty Python.

Then what would you do with this nut house full of puppets?

Well the puppet masters would soon find new puppets but anyway is there method in their madness? Is there something they are getting out of this rabbit plan?

I'm the liberal in the group here and I don't say it's Bush's fault.
This is the beaurachy's fault. The concept is; What ever's good for the group as a whole is good for each individual as well. Thus, as was mentioned earlier if Zoos or Fairs or Circuses have to provide a plan as to what they'll do with their animals in the case of disasters, then people who use individual animals should also have plans as to what they'll do with their animals should they be involved in a disaster. Just make some stuff up, print out a couple of copies, send one in and keep the other. It's stupid, but I don't see what the big fuss is about.

USDA also defines Jack Russell terrier trials as entertainment. Anyone who shows must obtain a license and keep renewing it forever.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
