Apparently a couple of Putin's thugs gave him a beating a couple of years ago.

At the height of my chess powers, I managed to beat a guy on this list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_peo......in_chess More specifically, the guy was Viktors Pupols. Of course, Pupols beat Fischer when Fischer was 12 years old. Although Fischer was a strong player even then, he had not yet achieved grandmaster status, much less the dominant position in the chess world he eventually gained. But, to be sure, Pupols is no slouch either -- either in 1955 when he beat Fischer, or when I played him in the 90's. |

Well he has never beaten me.

I see that you get your kicks above the waistline, sunshine. Sorry, but the queens you use would not excite me.

I mean, dude plays the Latvian Gambit against real people, for Pete's sake! I have an autographed (by Pupols) copy of Larry Parr's book on him - Viktors Pupols: American Master. I met him a couple of times when I was working for Labate's Chess Center. The book is short, but there's some of the most creative, exciting, attacking, original chess there. He's rightfully a legend in the Pacific Northwest chess scene, and influenced many of the area's top players, most notably GM Yasser Seirawan.

Latvian gambit for those, like myself, whose chess game is less than lovely:

Indeed! In fact, his win vs. Fischer was with the black side of the Latvian.
Separately, do you (Lobo) still play at least semi-seriously any more? If you ever end up in Boston, it'd be fun to play a few games... at least to help you warm up for real competition. There's a good (and occasionally great) chess scene here in Boston. This past weekend I went to one of the regular chess spots, and Larry Christiansen was there, along with two IMs (Vigorito and Esserman), a WIM (didn't catch her name), three or four 2300-2400's, and many more mere mortals. |

Latvian Gambit is my choice as black. I hate defending & would rather have activity & lose than be on the backfoot the whole game.
I believe Dai Vernon used to enjoy a game of chess. Like magic it's a subject that you never stop learning about. |

Off with his head! A magician must have a red and white set, don't you know.
