Recently it has become apparent that I need to start performing in a professional context, and I'm currently building a children's show and an adult show. I am a 27 year old poor college student with no job because I have a condition in my knees that doesn't allow me to stand for 6-8 hour shifts, (which is most of the available work around my area). Not to mention I am pursuing two different degrees simultaneously, and need time to study, which a job not ending until 11pm every night doesn't allow for. I am fortunate enough to have a wonderful, amazing wife who works and provides while I go to college, but I have the need to make my own contribution now, rather than wait until I get my degrees. The problem is, I need money to buy a few things still needed for the show, to make it more professional and polished. (Such as website, a few props I no longer have, etc.)

That being said, I'm thinking of making a DvD/video to raise the money.

Over the course of 15 years of magic, I have developed many of my own routines and handlings for various effects, as well as different ways to use old props, gimmicks and the like. From everything to tackling the infamous "last coin vanish" to what to do with that old vanishing cane that's too slow and loud. Some are close up effects with cards and coins, and a few have stage applications. Some I've used for years, and some I've done only once or twice and put away. And a few, I've conceptualized and worked on, but never quite finished. Some are simple utility moves and the like, that have been very helpful to me over the years. There will be a lot of stuff on here, and my only limit is it has to fit on a single DvD when it's done.

I was thinking of sharing this information in the form of a video. Nothing fancy that would cost a lot, but rather a homemade video with the focus on the routines and magic rather than decorative menus. I know how to do basic editing, and have a few friends that would help out.

Again, this wouldn't be intended to be something that was high quality in production, but rather high quality in information.

I know that most of these are original to me, but there are a few I'll have to research to make sure before they are filmed. I'm aware of the need to do this research, so there's no need to remind me of it!

My idea is this. After making the video, I'll send it to a few people for free, pending they promise to provide an honest review. (the price will be based on how much information I can put on there.) I am, however, not going to be listing everything covered in the video before hand, though I will tip some things so you know what you're getting.

I know that this project won't make me rich and famous, but if it helps me raise money to polish the shows I am building so I can make a living, and it gives some magicians some new effects and routines and ideas, I figure why not? This isn't intended to be a commercially sold product that hits the market, just a magician trying to raise money to start performing by selling some of his material. If I can raise 500 bucks I'd be thrilled, though I'd hope for more, lol.

More than likely, I'll be making this and putting it on a DvD (at home) and mailing it. There's the possibility of an online version, but this is beyond my knowledge to do and I'd rather keep my ideas off of torrents and other illegal downloading methods. I also know that many people including myself have slow internet and downloading a large video would be difficult.

That being said, any opinions or advice? has this been done?

Hey Brian,
if I understood you correctly you are not performing in a professional contexts, which probably means that the routines you are working on are not "audience proven".

we don't know if those routines really worth the money, and if you are someone that we want to learn from.
I think if you want to be taken seriously you should first do those routines many many times, to explore every possibility and than think about DVD.

Another thing is that if your goal is raising money for your magic career, I think you have chosen the toughest way, making a DVD will take you a lot of time, nothing guarantees that you will make a profit.
in fact even if you raise those 500$ it is nothing compare to what you need (it won't cover, a professional website, photo sessions, prom-videos, a costume, microphone, etc).

I hope you will be able to raise money in some easier way (

I was in your situation and I did street magic and restaurant magic to raise money, it worked extremely well

Hey Herr Smile

Happy Holidays...

May I offer a suggestion on your excellent idea?

Too many Magic instructional videos put out today are very low-quality & it does indeed affect its word-of-mouth selling potential, Bro (search the forums for many such complaints)

However, it is not very difficult nor expensive at all to create a high-quality video (on par with ELLUSIONIST's quality), you just need some very basic equipment

as an Actor/Filmmaker on "hiatus" for a few months before my next film-project, I'm taking advantage of the time-off to immerse myself back into Magic, as performing Close-Up has been my Passion/First-Love for 30+yrs - it would be a great pleasure to learn more bout your video project & offer my assistance with the filming of it if you would like Smile
"YOU Are The MAGIC"

Peace, Love, & Success

Hey sign up for Uber. My friend pulls in over a 1000 gross each week. I am going through with the background check with Uber so I can make some good money. Since you cant stand for long periods this would be perfect for you.
