Christopher,

You are obviously much more polite than I am ... usually I'll think of a few other letters first.

Dan.

I cranked thru an entire bag of these in about 10 minutes trying to make the beak on a cockatoo. Screw it!!! He can have a yellow beak like all the other birds.

Sounds like you are trying to make Patrick's bird beak. I've broken more than my share of black hearts making that bird beak. The other bad thing about black hearts is that they seem to deteriorate pretty quickly. The older they are, the more likely they are to pop. That has been my experience anyway.

Yeah, Patrick's beak is a bear! To be honest, blacks in general irritate the crap out of me. I switched about a year ago from Q's to B's as the Q's were popping non-stop. Had good luck for a while, but now the B's seem to be popping and people tell me the Q's have gotten better. I'm really ready for someone to make a good black balloon.

I worked at a balloon delivery store back in 1983 when balloon specialty shops were just coming on. We did a dozen black and an "Over the Hill" mylar as one of the arrangements and you could depend on popping several and getting a nice gooey Hi-Float shower.

It must be something about the pigment or the manufacturing process.

It was indeed for Patrick's bird! I always wanted to do a really nice bird for my (eh-hem) David's mask, and decided that Patrick's bird was the one I wanted. It's not hard to make at all provided you don't use black hearts! Grrr....

But I think it looks good with a yellow beak...I wish they made golden rod hearts...those would look the best I think...

Are they popping on inflation or twisting? if on the twisting, have you tried inflating, deflating, and then inflating to a good size? any difference?

Blacks are jewel tones & jewel tones, imo, pop easier while twisting. They don't like being rubbed against themselves.

Wes,

It's not a matter of making them soft, it's the fact that once you inflate them, they feel as if they're dissolving in your hands. I would guess 40% of them popped upon inflation. The other 60 percent popped while trying to catch a raisin inside. Complete waste of money and my time! BOO!

Preston,

Never thought of that! I'll give those a shot!

An inverted 6" geo works well for the beak.
