Our mutual friend Mark Lewis has shared with some of us the story of your Royal Command Performance for 2 certain young princes. Are you allowed to mention it or do you get thrown in the Tower or have to take tea with Princess Michael, or some other terrible royal prerogative?

I was booked to perform an illusion act at a nightclub in London’s Piccadilly called Zenon. The club had only recently opened. As I was about to go on stage, I was told that some celebrities would be arriving in a few minutes, and the manager asked me to delay my performance. The celebrities turned out to be Prince Andrew, Prince Charles, Princess Diana and Sarah Fergusson. I never saw them afterwards, so I hope they enjoyed the show! I was especially excited by this, as it had the consequence that I would in future be able to say I had performed for royalty in my publicity. The act that went on stage before me was somewhat controversial, as they used a live black panther. This was the first time that a wild animal had ever been used at a club right in the heart of London’s west end. I was told it caused a line of animal rights protesters outside the building. My greater concern was that there was very little room backstage, and I literally had to climb over the panther’s cage with my props before I could make my entrance on stage.
There was the occasion of the Bicentennial of The Times Newspaper. This took place at Hampton Court, which was the old palace of King Henry the Eighth. There were Kings, Queens and heads of State in attendance from all over Europe, as well as many politicians. The Prime Minister of England, Mrs. Thatcher was also present, along with many members of her cabinet. There were a number of other entertainers performing both on stage and walking about throughout the evening. At one point Mrs. Thatcher and all the major dignitaries were in an upstairs room at the Palace, drinking and talking. A firework display was about to start over the River Thames and someone had to announce this to the important guests. As I have an extremely loud voice, I was unanimously voted for the job. I walked up the stone steps to a large room which was packed full. Champagne was flowing freely and the conversations were loud. Without a microphone, I announced that everyone was to proceed downstairs as there was going to be an amazing firework display. Many of the guests look surprised, almost as if I was an alien who had arrived from another planet. However, in an orderly fashion, they all listened to me and proceeded downstairs. For a few short moments, I had Kings and Queens and famous political figures all listening to me instead of me to them. I must say, it felt jolly good. I performed at a memorable birthday party for boys in Kensington. These boys went to a private school in central London called Wetherby. The party took place in the basement of the house. I got to the party early, and changed into my costume in the bathroom. There was a knock on the bathroom door. Before I had time to say “wait a minute”, the door had been pushed open. There were three boys standing there. One of them I recognized as Prince William, son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and a future King of England. I asked them their names, and commanded them to kindly leave the bathroom. They did not obey, so I ended up having to close the door in their faces. The party itself was quite dramatic. It was a two hour party so I started by organizing games with the children prior to my magic show. Prince William was 7 years old at the time, and quite excitable. He got into a fight with one of the other boys (as boys do), and he ended up being pushed over. He landed on my pa system, and his eye was bleeding. There was a bodyguard there, and William was immediately taken out of the party and home to Kensington Palace I presume. It was a shame, really, as he never got to see my magic show. The next day, it was the Trooping of the Color ceremony in London. This is a big event, and the prominent members of the Royal Family come out on to the balcony at Buckingham Palace to give the traditional wave. Prince William was amongst them. I saw a picture in the Daily Telegraph the following day of the balcony scene. On close inspection, I could see that William had a black eye. The press never picked up on it, but I knew the source. |
