George Mason economist Walter Williams discusses profiling, here:
Quote:
We can think of profiling as a method to economize on information costs by using easily observed physical characteristics as a proxy or a guess for some other characteristic more difficult or costlier to observe. For example, say you seek to hire people to manually unload trucks containing heavy merchandise. I’m guessing that most would use sex as a proxy for strength and select men over the women. That can be called sex profiling. Of course, if you assumed that men and women have equal strength, you’d hire randomly. |

I have a number of police professionals within my family. I doubt that there is a beat police officer within the country that doesn't regularly use profiling in the performance of their job.

I have to admit this is puzzling. Half the remarks here were dedicated to insisting that Zimmerman didn't racially profile, and now the same people are insisting that racial profiling is something everyone does anyway and is useful.
Woland: As a former cab driver, I made snap judgments about people all the time. But you know what--it's still illegal (at least in NYC) to pass anybody by solely because of his or her race. And that's how it should be, no matter what any statistics say. The conversation in the world is moving beyond the narrow instance of GZ and even TM. It's about how to deal with the inequities of race, and what responsibility people are going to take for the way their legal, ethical, and political systems are.

Hi landmark,
No problem with that. Quote:

I don't understand what you find "puzzling." Both of those positions might be true, no? |

Hypothetically, if someone of the race of "greens" were present, and they always killed the cab driver, would that still hold true?

Aren't police officers held to a higher unrealistic standard that no human being could ever possibly meet but is still applied to police officers regardless of this fact? Aren't police officers supposed to be sinless and perfect according to the official standards they are held to? Surely, they couldn't be profiling to do their job could they! Ohh wait, I forgot, my bad, police officers are human just like the rest of us and have a tough job to do but the public doesn't seem to understand that. I guess I have just been listening to the unrealistic expectations that the law and the public apply to police officers too much instead of paying attention to how things really are in reality. I think society holds police officers to unrealistic standards personally in all seriousness. It's almost seems as if you have to be sinless and perfect if you are going to be a cop, according to the unrealistic standard police are held to that is. Which is why I would never want to be a cop because I know I can't meet the public's expectations of pure perfection that it expects of police officers.

Actually putting that into practice may well make some uncomfortable and wary of losing some of their privilege at first. In the long run though, it makes a saner, safer, and happier world for all.

Reminds me a bit of my Feminist Legal Theory professor, who thought it was unfair for a woman who takes a year off from working at a law firm to "lose" a year of seniority to a man who didn't; I suggested that it was more unfair to give her the year of seniority and keep her on pace with another woman who didn't have a child, but worked 2,000 more hours at the firm that year.
My seminar paper on libertarian feminism didn't go over well.

So, apparently (at least some) jurors believed Zimmerman was guilty after all.
