I have been performing in early learning centers for many years.
during the summer I offer my spectacular sizzlin summer magic show, during the school year I offer from January - April my dental health show and for any other time I offer my Deafinitely magic show. both shows are also for k-5 but I change the material a bit for schools verses day cares (early learning centers) actually I should say these are my school shows that I change up for day cares. I offer a discount to the centers and schools if they book both shows in the same year. I too agree with you Jolly that fees are off limits. however I have at times offered guidance on how to establish a fee. I share this. in no particular order 1- what does the market bare in your area 2-what are you worth 3-what do you need to charge in order to make money from the gigs 4- are you really worth what you are charging 5-once you have enough experience you will know better what you should be charging. it takes time to find the right fee for you and your area. educational shows can get more then just fun shows and for those that say schools don't pay well-- then you have not marketed yourself well enough to get the fees I know I get and others get regularly. good job Jolly and thanks for sharing your info. sam

I know several of you are asking me questions, and I will try and answer them all in order, but it may take a day or two so please forgive me!! First to Kimmo's important question:

There have been supposed Alien spacecraft sighted over Sedona on many occasions, and there are some of the major vortices on the planet located in this area. There is a ley line that goes from our house to Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, and in the other direction to Ayres Rock in Australia. When you look up at the heavens, on a clear night you can see millions of stars, and they are just in our galaxy. It is a perfect setting for children of local daycares to explore the mysteries of the universe. As you know, kids love stories of people visiting earth from other planets, so what better place to allow these impressionable young minds to consider these stories may not all be fiction and that there is the possibility that we are not alone!! I tell the kids that we do not know all the answers, but that it is good to keep an open mind about anything and everything. I do not believe in indoctrinating children with what I consider to be the truth, but I encourage them to use their imagination, and realize that many things are still a mystery. With this in mind, and I will likely get into trouble over this, I am not a fan of gospel magic, even though I am a big fan of the message of Jesus Christ, and call myself a Christian. Thanks for the quick response Roger, and for being candid with me about the DVD. I look forward to your new DVD in August and learning what the contents will include. I didn't see an email list on your web site that one can join, but I would be interested in knowing whenever you come out with new items such as this DVD you just mentioned Of course I'm sure you won't keep it a secret in the Café.
By the way, nice lineup for your school packages as well! For someone that makes a living entertaining kids, you sure have some impressive business savvy when it comes to marketing yourself with added value. - Gary |

My question more a general practice amongst us. For us, we normally charge educational shows higher than birthday party rates because it's a "themed" show. However, we also realized that many centers may not have the budget to pay for higher fees. It's a challenge to find a balance between the affordability and value. But I think Sam has covered that pretty well too, so thanks, Sam. |

Roger,
You mentioned that you will be releasing a new DVD in August. Can you provide any insight into the contents of this new DVD at this time? I'm specifically interested in learning more about the various games you do at children's parties, for picking up new ideas. Will this DVD go into any detail on that topic? Will there be any introductory special pricing on this DVD, and are you taking pre-orders at this time? Gary |

I have several other magician friends who live in Arizona, and they always tell me that Arizona is a slim pickens state, but you are making monthly visits to day care centers. What are you doing that my other friends from Arizona are not doing. I hope my friend George from Tucson is listening.

It is basically my lecture on incorporating games into your 2 hour party, that was filmed live at the first Kapital Kidvention in 2010. I also have the lecture notes available, and there is a special offer if you buy both of these, which you will see on my website. The DVD that is being released at Kidabra is "Merry Mayhem and Magic with Jolly Roger". It is a 2 hour DVD which includes a 45 minute unedited show filmed live at a library, which shows me setting up and even driving to the show. Also, you will see me talking about over 30 bits of business you can include in your show with minimum or no props. At the end of the DVD, you will have a full explanation of both versions my Cloth of Invisibility, showing how to make it up yourself. I shall also have my new lecture notes available after Kidabra, for those unable to attend. These are the "Merry Mayhem" notes, and include 52 fun bits of business you can include in your shows. My new DVD will be $35 including postage to anywhere in the world. It should be on my website in a few days for those who wish to pre-order. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks! Does your educational message for each show diminish its memorability factor with over exposure on the kids seeing you?
If a nursery was to book all 12 shows, then I can imagine the children will have forgotten the first four shows because they will have seen you so much. How often does a daycare book all 12 shows? Does that 30 minute show include making all the children a balloon animal or games, or is it 100% educational magic routines? If so, how many routines do you fit in? |

"Does your educational message for each show diminish its memorability factor with over exposure on the kids seeing you?" No. it is the highlight of the month for many of theses kids according to the teachers.
"If a nursery was to book all 12 shows, then I can imagine the children will have forgotten the first four shows because they will have seen you so much. How often does a daycare book all 12 shows?" Most of the time. "Does that 30 minute show include making all the children a balloon animal or games, or is it 100% educational magic routines? If so, how many routines do you fit in?" I don't do balloon animals or games at the daycares. I average about 4 tricks/routines per show. JR |

I hope Jolly Roger doesn't mind me chipping in but just to say that he is right on the money concerning themed educational shows for schools, preschools, day cares etc.
Many times I have informed entertainers that if they want to be busy and booked often then they need to be different and doing an educational show for schools with magic is hugely popular here in the UK but just like "full parties" entertainers here just let it pass them by. I must admit that I don't have a different themed show per month but offer all that I do for them to choose what they think would fit their requirements. The most popular ones are: Anti bullying say no to strangers Anti drugs Healthy living - 5 a day amongst others. ku7uk3 , Stephen - Hi ya , Whilst I don't do games in this type of show I do some balloon modelling. Routines depend on which theme is used and the show usually lasts 40 / 45 minutes. The potential opportunity is huge, the number of preschool and daycares springing up locally is growing every day and with the correct marketing methods you will attract business for them and the offshoot potential for Birthday Parties from these is vast - I know Also, just to help you out, a few bucks spent on correct matketing material that can be given away to all the children at these shows will bring you an excellent return. Hope this helps, Stuart.
