I got out and hit up a festival the other day, did about the same as I normally do, which is not as great as some of you but pretty awesome in my opinion anyway the highlight of my day was after a small show for only one guy and his two kids, I didn't expect to get more than 2 or 3 bux in my hat, and then the guy drops a 20 in it. I'm sure that doesn't happen all the time for anybody and dang it felt amazing.
what's the biggest tip you've gotten from one person? |

$101.00. Couple puts $100 in my hat then goes to watch the next show. When that show ended the couple walks towards me and hands me a dollar bill. I smiled and asked, "And what is this for?" The man says they were going to give it to the show next door but he sucked so you can have his dollar." Happened @ Mallory Square, Key West.

Have a question. What are you doing busking a festival? I work several festivals...had to get hired to do it by the committee in charge. The vendors that are there have to pay a vendor fee to put up their booth. The entertainment that is there has been hired to perform. You walking in to busk taking money from all these people is going to **** everyone off, and sour them on magicians. Take the time to contact the committee in charge of the festival to get hired. They will usually let you have a spot to do BOR if that is your wish. Just food for thought...will give you more good will all around and make life easier for future performers.

Sorry Bob but you are wrong on this one. I do get permission to work festivals but most say busk because we can't afford to pay entertainers. I always set up near one of the beer vendors, they usually give me free beer for bringing customers to them. A word of warning, when temp index is HIGH remember that beer will dehydrate you, drink water instead.

The festivals are more than happy to have what they view as free entertainment, it's not costing them anything and their customers love it. meanwhile the vendors have no reason to get mad, as far as they're concerned I'm just like another vendor, you never see a vendor get bent out of shape because of other vendors, never once have I heard "man there's 27 vendors at this festival, I was told there would be 26, that's it, pack it up, no money to be made here"
that's kind of genius Paddy, I tend to set up close to some sort of food truck whenever I can simply because I know there's gonna be a steady flow of people there. but I'm under age so no free beer for me haha. I'll go through a dozen bottles of water without blinking an eye though. |

I stand corrected. Getting their permission first would work. I think ambushing them would not.

Food trucks are good to be near because they handle cash and folk have got change as cash that they can put in your hat. Automatic Teller Machines and stalls that deal in cash are good to be near, also.
The presentation makes the magic.

This particular festival was just so blasted hot and I forgot my sunscreen. I started set up across from a food truck but after a couple hours I moved way down at the end under a big shade tree. I'm sure I cost myself several good hats by being out of the way like that but I saved myself the pain of sun burn.

I salt my hat with a $5 and two or three $1 bills and I always keep it less than half full. When I clean it out I leave the larger bills and just very few $1 bills. Full hats and the crowd thinks "he's got enough I don't need to tip. Empty hats and no one wants to be the first to tip. Coins are like rabbits they create a bunch more coins that don't change into bills. |

I empty my hat after each show because I wear it through the show, only taking it off at the end. nonetheless I found what people say about suggesting a price does make a difference, recently changed from "a couple dollars" to "a few dollars, some give 3 some give five" a full days busking with the prior yeilded me over 15 bux in annoying heavy change, while great for playing pool it's lousy for anything else. where as a full day of the latter only left me with about 2 bux in change and more bills.

Saw a guy in Boulder who used this little net for a hat. The change would go right thru and hit the ground.

I have put money in a girl's pants.
A G-string is "pants" isn't it?
