Manipulation, technique, timing. It's all there.

I grew up watching Hey Hey It's Saturday (it ran for over 20 years) and it launched the careers of many now well known talents, Strassman being one of them. He was a regular on the show and other than Chris Kirby was the only vent Australia knew of at that time. IMO Strassman is probably the most innovative ventriloquist today. He's great.

David was a frequent visitor to my studio back in the 1980s, when he was living in New York working he clubs (as I recall, he also possibly had a regular gig emceeing at a club whose name escapes me). He was an entertaining and polished performer even back then. A few years later I ran into him at an audition and we talked for a while, and he mentioned that he was shifting his material to a much more topical, edgier style and was starting to work a bit with electronics as well. It was all forward momentum from there.
So great to see the international success he's enjoyed since then!

LOL, that was good.
After watching the video posted, I watched this one;

Am I seeing that right, are Chuck's eyes lighting up when he's looking at someone in the audience and doing the evil thing? I like that, I could use a figure with that effect.

Yep Chuck's eyes did and still do light up. Strassman plays on the idea that people say they're freaked out by ventriloquist dummies even if it's really just rhetoric on their part. Love it!

That's why I like that effect, because I've always played on that idea too.
