I am reading all about books for new magicians and agree with most of what's written here. I got started with Bill Tarr's works and found them invaluable and then moved onto Paul Harris, and Pure Magic by Henry Gross. There's a lot of overlap, of course, but that doesn't stop me from looking at them all periodically. But I digress. I get a lot of benefit from DVDs -- Ammar, Frank Garcia, Bill Malone, Paul Harris -- and seeing how they handle some simple effects that I might otherwise ignore. Malone is a genius at this and a decent teacher.
But I love Patrick Page and really moved ahead with his sponge balls and, though I don't do this much, his 3-shell work. He's a great teacher, the work is quite basic, and you really get a sense of how to apply simple routines to entertaining effect. He doesn't get as much attention as I think he warrants. I think he's wonderful for beginners. |

I agree. I think Pat Page was a GIANT, for both the beginner and seasoned performer as well.

What resource did you use for his sponge balls?

It was a sad day when Pat Page passed away. When he started to become ill and I heard the news that he was sitting down with his notes and writing a book I was relived. Because as mentioned he was a giant and losing such is sad, but for all what he created and knew just to go with him would have been tragic. One reason I think he dose not get as much attention as others is he really dint get in to the marketing side of things. You could only get his stuff apart from books from him at the few conventions he would do. Even in 2008 I spoke to him about getting a Moore diary of him and he was like send him a cheque and he would post it out. No on-lone or mail order catolge. Dader your right to say his work is basic as it is well thought out and a lot of what he shares is what he has used. When I saw him lecture in 2006 I just got back into magic. His simple no fuss approach was what hit me. He showed 3 flamboyant ways of secretly ditching a coin. he then showed us his method called putting a coin in your pocket while no one is looking.
I love Page by Page and all what his family are doing with his legacy. I got to spend a train ride from Blackpool to London with him which I will never forget.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |
