I've been reading a lot of the letters from famous [and not so famous] magicians that they've been printing in MAGIC magazine and I've come to an important opinion but one that's might make me very unpopular.
Houdini was in no way shape or form the ''world's greatest magician.'' He was certainly the world's greatest escape artist. He created the field and no matter how much people ''out do'' him in the modern age, he will always stand at the pinacle of that field. He was also the world's greatest at promotion. He knew how to get his name out there in the public and get people talking about him. But in reading these letters, I've come to the conclusion that magicians of the day had very little respect for Houdini as a magician His sleight of hand wasn't very good and his ego got in the way of him ever acknowledging that he needed improvement. The story of his claiming he could figure out any card trick after seeing it three times and Dai Vernon fooling him with a simple sleight and gimmick to the point where he had his wife come over and watch the trick a couple of times just so he could see it again and he still didn't figure it out comes to mind. Also [don't know the name] there was some master manipulator showing a few knuckle buster sleights. Another magician at the performance made the mistake of saying; ''Here's a guy who could teach us a thing or two, Harry.'' Whereupon Houdini went ballistic, snapping; ''You saying there's something wrong with my sleight of hand[q]'' My personal favorites would be; Mark Wilson, who was the first magician I actually saw and, Doug Henning who broke us out of the ''white tie and tails'' straitjacket we'd gotten into.

I think everybody answered your question as clear and precise as what it could possibly be. now if you were to ask me who was my favorite magician alive, well hands down it would be Teller no contest, but still there are guys like Paul Daniels, David Copperfield, and Dave Williamson that would definitely be a close second. my of all time still remains Slydini . but you should understand the question you're asking and accept the answers you have because all the answers are an honest opinion of each not complicating it just stating it. |

1. In your opinion, who is the greatest magician in the history of the world?
2. Who is your favorite magician of all time? 3. Am I mistaken 2 believe that 1's favorite magician can't be his/hers ALL TIME greatest magician in the history of the world based on their opinion? Three completely different questions. A favorite magician would seem to be someone we have actually seen and, thus, wouldn't necessarily be the "greatest in the history of the world," because there is no basis for comparison. |

You're correct, Ed. Even in his lifetime, Houdini didn't get very high marks for his magic by the theatrical and magic critics of the time. His reputation was based nearly entirely on his escapes and, later in life, his exposes of mediumistic fraud.

The best I've ever seen perform was Del Ray.

Going strictly by the OP...
In my opinion, the "greatest... " is the guy who's had the most effect on the general public and who is the most remembered by the general public as a magician. For me, that has to be Houdini. No he wasn't particularly good at magic itself, but he's the only performer of magic who's had several movies made about him, plus a number of books for the general public, plus:
and probably a few other things I missed. Remember, now, the OP asked for an opinion.

Houdini is probably the greatest legend in magic and I agree with your conclusion if the only criterion for "greatest in the history of the world" is public name recognition.
But by that standard, Criss Angel is a greater magician than Dai Vernon. |

Well, yeah, name recognition by the general public and legendary status were the criteria I used based on my interpretation of the OP. As has already been noted, the question leaves room for interpretation.
Now, if the OP had asked who I think is the best performer, or the most creative, or something else, my answer would have been different.
