Let me be the first!
My background is part-time busking with street magic shows.
A very well produced documentary in various ways, I think. A look in depth at some buskers and their lives, what motivates them, problems working on the streets. A good film for buskers to affirm "That's the way it is, indeed" and for others to say, "I know a lot more about buskers and busking than I did before I watched this film." I was surprised that the film didn't show the buskers in some real busy foot traffic situations. Being at a place with a lot of some-what strolling foot traffic [rather than the pedestrians rushing by] is a/the main criteria for a pitch. Tell us a little about the busy pitches in Charlotte, please. I was interested to see the portrayal of busking rules.

I enjoyed footage of you. Little of it was about showing your tricks as such. The film covered a lot of ground. Most of it about you seemed to be you trying to get people to stop to watch, which is a real challenge usually. I'm glad the filming group included a magician in among the buskers.

Thanks for sharing this film. I enjoyed watching it.

From the busking side, I was interested that group of you Charlotte buskers got together to walk the area to discuss the possible pitches. Sharing where places are good...hmmm. Fact is, a pitch that's very good for a guitarist may not be so good for a street Magic Show, in part because of performing space area needed. A guitarist can have a pitch against a building side and gets a trickle income that seems to be pretty well a steady flow [well sometimes] while the Magic Show usually requires an area where a few rows of people can stand back from the magician and he has to hat the crowd [that's the only time he gets his money]. There's more work involved in performing a magic show than in busking, I reckon. Most important, do what you enjoy. I don't play the guitar, so ...

I just saw you in Charlotte a couple weeks ago. We were visiting my girlfriends daughter who lives in Cornelius and we had been to the movie that night. We stood on the second level looking around and I spotted you. Unfortunately, the weather was crappy so we didn't stick around to watch anything, but I did pick up one of your stickers as we were leaving. I got frustrated because I watched you do some effects for a small group who appeared as if they had a good time and as near as I could tell, didn't drop a dime in your hat.

Good luck

Stickers? Hannibal, tell us about the stickers - publicity, I expect.

Being a part of the doc and participating in the subsequent festival (BUSK-A-PALOOZA!) was an exceptinal time. April, the director/ writer/ photographer wanted to capture our essence beyond the performance side. From our words. I'm quite proud of her result.

Yes, the stickers are another part of my branding campaign ... my stylish logo with my website in a cool design.

Giobbi1, sorry you couldn't stick around ... next time?

I'm sure I'll be back down before summer is over and I will make it a point to stop by. Keep hammering.

G'day Hannibal

I finally got enough time to watch the documentary all the way through.

It was well worth the effort and time - it is a top quality production and presents the busking experience form a wide range of perspectives.

I am intrigued to know a little more about the bloke who set up the "Advice" booth on the railway station and paid people 5 cents for them to give him advice.

The development towards a dicussion of permits and city legislation was well concieved.

I am currently organising to do some busking in my state capital city (Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) which is 500 killometers form my home. I am currently reviewing the 2 seperate permits required as there are 2 areas of the city covered by 2 different authorities. It seems to me that both policies and permit systems for Sydney are almost identical and I note that a lot of what was presented as rules etc in Charlotte involved very much the same wording as the policies here in OZ.

Anyway Chris - thanks for making the effort to provide the link.

Hannibal - thank you for posting this documentary about busking. I especially enjoyed the focus on the performers and the variety of reasons they busk. It was great to see the buskers viewpoint of their art and the street as a venue. I am very hopeful that the role of buskers will become more valued in Charlotte in the months and years ahead. Thanks again for sharing this with the Café community.
