I do videography for a living so I've got several pro cameras. Recently however I picked up a used Canon XA10. It's a GREAT camera! It's small but it's got many of the features that my large more expensive cameras have. The picture quality is incredible. These retail for around $1800 but you can pick up a used one for around $1000 or so. Canon just released an upgraded XA20 and XA25 which would be even better plus they have wifi which is a nice feature. The XA20 retails for around $2100. All of these cameras have XLR mic inputs so you can use whatever kind of mic you want. Also have built in mics for convenience when sound isn't such a priority.
These aren't inexpensive but when you use them and see the results, you understand why. |

I've got a small Panasonic PV-GS31 digital video camcorder. It's awesome!! Filmed a LOT of magic and it always comes out just fine. From close up to stage performance to magic shows for clubs, weddings, school concerts, etc... Has never given me any problems. Doesn't have a remote mic, but that's OK with me. It cost about $250 +/- when I got it and is now discontinued.
For what you're wanting to do, look for something in this price range and you'll be fine. Just make sure it has a digital zoom feature for those close-ups you may want to do. However, if you want professional grade video equipment, think about the advice above. Sounds like some really nice equipment. Just consider what your wallet will allow and what you want to do with it. Mark. |
