Hey gang!

Just got an e-mail about a discount at Pauls site and since I have been happy with his stuff in the past I was thinking of buying something during this period. Since most of his stuff is good I was just hoping we could get a thread going discussing his books and what you guys think of it. It would help me, and probably others, to get some thoughts about his books in onea thread instead of having to search through about 20 review threads.

So basically: Which books do you think is paul Voodinis best and why?

Thanks for the help guy:D

Any idea how we might also receive that discount? I've been wanting to purchase his book Midnight Side of the Mind for a while and if he's having a sale, now might be the time to do it.

Thanks Godzilla. Didn't realize it was a 2 for 1 special. I originally went to the site looking at the prices but after looking back at it I realized how it works. Guess I should've actually read the copy Smile

I bought it and I'd recommend you save your money. Very average and way over rated. But hey, just my opinion. Very, very disappointed with being able to use this in real life performance for entertainment. If you hang around crystal shops, then maybe

Wow. Thanks for the review. I'd heard a lot of good things about it. I personally do a hypnosis bit on stage that utilizes a single volunteer and was hoping that I might pick up some tips on selecting and managing a single hypnosis volunteer. Would you say that it would be worth it in that regard?

It brushes on hypnotic technique, so very vaguely a serious hypnotist would cringe. The idea of the script is nice but it's soooo over priced and hyped by friends in the business, 100 quid is ridiculous for what this is. You would really need to be a very accomplished hypnotist to get any use out of this, and then that would be because you work it, improve it and are determined to make it work. You are paying for just a very very bare script. I cannot see it being entertaining to anyone other than a one on one. If you were in an audience you'd die of boredom. I really can't see this was road tested outside of senior citizen town hall free nights for the Battersea Dogs Home.
Now, if the script was $9.95, I say buy it for the basic idea.
Again, one man's trash is another's treasure. I really wanted this to be a worker, it failed me, thus my utter disappointment.

Completely disagree. This is a wonderful piece of work and aimed at the serious worker.
If you purely into "look how clever I am" tricks then avoid this.

If you want to give your audience an experience that is unforgettable and as close to real magic as you can get
then explore this work as you will benefit. It's a strong and effective concept rather than a shrink wrapped, out of the box routine.
I have two pieces in my show inspired by this work and cannot recommend it high enough.

I think the main issue people may have is that the focus and credit are lain solely at the feet of the participant rather than the performer so
the "wow! How did you do that magic man???" response that many of you thrive on is absent.
Instead, the participant will think "How did I do that???"

Have to say I use Paul's Midnight Side of Mind ideas in the real world at everything from Corporate events to Festivals. Admitedly its not for everyone, but for thise brave enough to go there it will open up new levels of possibilities with your performances.

This whole thread seems to be the same - hyped by friends in the business. Any serious hypnotist wouldn't need this or bother with the added components.

Just what we need more magicians pretending to do hypnosis.

I am not a 'friend' of Paul's. I have met him on a handful of occasions. He is a nice guy, but I owe him no favours. I can be honest.

I saw Paul perform at a show for the public, and he absolutely blew them away with Kiss of the Clairvoyant. It does work in real world situations. The hypnosis is basic, but Paul does not claim to be a hypnosis tutor. The routine is very strong, and is covered in considerable detail - along with plenty of variations.

I have used it in the real world, and not for an elderly tea-room audience. I used it as the backbone of my halloween shows in a theme park for the past few years (they re-booked me) and in college shows, private corporate gigs, even once during a murder mystery night. It kills. A great routine.

It helps if you are a solid hypnotist. But this is great stuff, if you have the eyes to see it, and the nerve to perform it. I recommend this highly if you are a working pro. Many people think nothing of spending a thousand on an electronic dice that is at best a two minute puzzle, but resent spending a tenth of that on something that could add a substantial new portion to their show. Surely knowledge is worth more than a bit of electronics or a new impression pad?

Just to clarify, I am a very serious about my performance and not into "look how clever I am" tricks. I just wanted to point that out. I also invested in the other supplements of this for quite a considerable amount of money, in fact almost the cost of of the original script itself. That was just monetary, the other investment was a considerable amount of time. Also bought other books/DVD's to study in depth the techniques required to successfully perform this. After some months, it just didn't work for the target crowd. The concept is interesting, but the actual reality for me is "it didn't work" There is just way too much vagueness to this.
All I can say to other performers who are interested in this, if you are really into Finley's stuff, and by that I mean able to pull off some of his more ambitious pieces, then perhaps you may be able to get some use from it. If you find his work interesting but not suitable for your persona, then this wont fly for you. It's far from a full well written piece, it's more like an interesting thought put out there. In fact I find a lot of his work like this, yes I've bought a few of his works. The others were not as expensive and I found them an interesting read more than practical pieces. But the full works on this is 198 pounds, that's a big chuck of change for the value it delivers.
I'd really like to see a performance of this by those who reckon they use it and not at the back of a new age book store but for a real general public audience, and see they were absolutely mesmerized, hell, I'd be happy with just entertained. Perhaps then I'd admit my failings.

I will be doing this several times over the next few months, but if you want a big public event, where the people vote with their feet, I will be performing five shows at Bunratty Folk Park, a theme park with roughly ten thousand passing through, on the Monday of the October Bank Holiday weekend. But get there early, because each one of the five shows will be stuffed. Just like the last few years.

Ha, LOL, no Tony, don't need people voting with their feet just some way of viewing this being performed as written. October you say, Bunratty Folk Park, I'll goggle it to find out where that is. Obviously you can endorse this for others to invest in it. Good. Always two sides of a story. Perhaps those interested in this can PM you for more info. Is it on your web site?

Nothing on my website - it is only twenty minutes of the show I do. My point is that it does work in the real world for some of us. I can accept that it will not suit everyone, but do not accept that it is sketchy and insufficient in Paul's manuscript.

Like Telepathy in Action or Dynamite Mentalism, it is an idea that is not for everyone, but is still very valuable for many. Dynamite Mentalism does not suit me, but I am glad I bought it.

I consider both Paul and Tony to be like minded compadres and pals within this often snidey and backstabbing industry and I know Tony is a successful pro-performer. Exactly the type who will benefit from MSOTM.

The bottom line is:

If you are an adventurous professional performer who wants to elevate their show beyond a succession of tacky tricks then this PDF will have huge value to you.

If you're a run of the mill mentalist who does about two gigs a year, has a day job and !@#$%es more on the Café than actually performing then you'll be wasting your money.

Oh, of coarse, now it all makes sense, I need to give up my day job to perform this. Didn't see that in the add, my bad. I get it Lord Freddy, you only like people who agree with you, otherwise, well there is no other opinion. Thank you for your very enlightening response.
