You've trumped me so bad I think I'll ask to delete this thread. I never heard the saws before and I'm still trying to figure out the buffalos.

A mixture of both: Is it too soon for two to desert each other on the desert, or should they not desert until after dessert?

Record each record carefully.
I was about to say that with two syllable verb-noun words, the verb stresses syllable 2, while the noun stresses syllable 1, but Magnus has a counter-example immediately above.

Maybe not quite involving homographs or heteronyms, but I love this sentence, due to Martin Gardner:
"Wouldn't the sentence 'I want to put a hyphen between the words Fish and And and And and Chips in my Fish-And-Chips sign' have been clearer if quotation marks had been placed before Fish, and between Fish and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and Chips, as well as after Chips?" |

And the classic: John, where Mary had had had had had had had. Had had had had the teacher's approval.
Translation: John and Mary take an English grammar test. John fills in the blank with "had had." Slacker Mary only writes "had." In fact though, "had had" was the correct answer according to the teacher.

Similar to this: that that is is that that is not is not
Punctuated is: That that is, is. That that is not, is not. |
