I'm curious if there is a card effect that exists in which you place a card face down on the table and simply ask your spectator to think of a card and the card on the table is that card.
No equivoque, fishing or sleights. Just think of a card and that is there card.

I do it. It only works about one out of fifty-two times. I think Chicago Surprise comes closest to this effect, if not to your requirements.
Harry Lorayne had a great version utilizing the Paul Curry Turnover. |

Take a look in Mnemonica, Tamariz, which has some variations regarding this and the Mexican turnover.

In the published literature there are several effects that meet your criteria. One is an effect that works (for me) about 80-85% of the time. You place a card face-down on the table, ask them to think of a card, and they name the card placed on the table. No equivoke, fishing or sleights. That one I'll keep to myself.
There is another one that works essentially the same way and is enhanced by the fact that you can repeat it several times. The first time someone did it to me I was blown away. I kept thinking of cards and they kept getting it right. This one I'll share. It's a Richard Osterlind routine called "Miracle Thought Projection" and can most readily be found in his book Mystique. This is an under-the-radar routine that requires the performer to be mentally on their A-game. Once again, no equivoke, fishing or sleights. In short, I know of NO method that meets your criteria that is 100% surefire. I don't think it exists unless you fudge the original conditions. E'voke routines can be very powerful but are difficult to do well. Think Joshua Quinn's "Dequivoke" or Bryn Reynolds "Seven" or Colin McLeod's version (can't remember the name). To make them seem natural and fair is quite difficult but is worth the practice time.

This isn't exactly what you want, but it's pretty darn close. You can use Marlo's Visual Retention Switch to switch the card on the table for the top card on the deck you are holding.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.
Steven you may correct that it may not exist. Equivoque has been as close as I've found. It's essentially become my go to "show me something" effect. I have Joshua's Paralies and Colin's penguin lecture which is where he discussed his method along with Marc Spellman's lecture also covers his method. And I agree practice has definitely made mine seem and feel more "free" and natural. I have yet to explore mnemonics as of yet but I know I should.

Derren Brown has several tricks that satisfy the stated criteria. They are on disk 2 of "The Devil's Picturebook." They hit approximately 80-90 percent of the time. But there are plenty of clever ways of using a switch to handle the times when you miss. Having a good sleight-of-hand method first makes it easier to summon up the nerve to do the non-sleight effect often enough to get really good at it. Only bad thing is that when you get it right, it's so good that many will think it was just a lucky guess. So I think it's best to do another killer effect to follow or precede it in order to minimize that idea.

Dani DaOrtiz performs a superb version of this trick, you can find it in his dvd's UTOPIA, or in his book "libertad de expresion" (only available in spanish)

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Anate by Dee Christopher, on sale at his website for £10 at the moment.
Its not 100% but there are some great thoughts on how to psychologically erase the attempt if it goes wrong, I think that Derren's international magic lecture tape has some thoughts on that subject also. |

The first thing that came to my mind was "Holy Blank" by Caleb Wiles. It's pretty clean, and really impossible.

You should check Tom Baxter's "A Card Merely Thought of.."
It is an incredible book, and you certainly won't regret it! Cheers, Nico. |

When I do this, if the card face down is the card thought of I have a miracle; it it's not I smile and put the card back in the deck without showing it and say, "I never miss." I look suprised at the smiles and say, "What?" as I go thru the deck and pull out the named card. "See?"
