I read in a book that Tarbell presented a routine with a rope which were inspired by Harry Houdini and Long Tack Sam. While doing his trick, Tarbell was talking about hindu philosophy and life. He had a great succes with it and magicians like Houdini and Thurston stopped their show to permit Tarbell to present his routine. Houdini even said he was fooled.
I don't know is this story (I read it 25 years ago) is true but I'd like to read the patter Tarbell used. Is anybody have ever heard of that? Can someone tells me if the patter in in a book? and where? Thanks for helping |

Unless I am mistaken, the trick and the patter can be found either in the Gabe Fajuri edition of Stewart James's book, or in the Tarbell course. I will check later and let you know.

The trick is indeed covered in the Stewart James Encyclopedia of rope magic. It is called "Mystic Hindu Circle" and you can find 6 methods of doing this trick from pages 65 thru 78 of this book.
Dr. Tarbell used it as a showstopper for Thurston, Houdini, Laurant, and Reno. I'm afraid that I can not reveal Dr. Tarbell's closely guarded secret because that just would be cheating. I will leave you with one hint. Pavel would have no trouble duplicating Dr. Tarbell's trick.

Hi Jiceh,
It's been a long day. My thanks to Al for providing you the reference. I think that those 6 methods are probably what you are looking for. There may be another description of the occult/mystic patter somewhere else, I'll keep looking. |

It does look interesting, and I must read up on it a bit more. It is a little like a Pavel trick I do.

Thanks Woland and Woland,
I have the Stewart James Encyclopedia of rope magic and I will read (I have just beginning) the trick in it. I'm not really intested by the method (The Pavel reference gives me a clue about the possible method used - or the kind of method)but more by the patter and how it flows with the effect. I'm not sure the patter is the one Tarbell use because in the patter, the author talks about a magician (Tarbell) who used to do this trick. I just hope the patter is as close as possible to the original one. Thanks again |

I have contacted Pavel to see if they will make me one. It is kinds similar to Pavel's walking knot.

Hi Jiceh,
I do have a memory of a lengthier patter with references to Hindu philosophy. I think the bare bones of it are in the Fajuri/James book, but I am still racking my brain and poring through my library to see if I can find it for you. |
